Thawed Out.
Ok, so our freezer died a day ago or something. Not sure when but in the last 2 days. It was still cold, and most everything was frozen for the most part.
Now here is my question. My feeders were in said freezer. The pinkies and smaller mice did thaw out. The rats didn't. Will they be alright, or not?

Re: Thawed Out.
I don't know anything about feeders, as my guy eats only live crickets. He's very picky.
But if it were human food and my meat was still partially frozen, I would refreeze it and not give it another thought. If it was thawed, I would use ASAP as long as it was still as cold as a refrigerator. If it was close to room temp, I would hesitate. Again, this is if it were my human food.
Sorry about your freezer

Ugh Nate that SUCKS. I would say that if it was still really cold, it would be OK to refreeze. But yes, if it was room temp, you'll probably need to toss.

Re: Thawed Out.
As long as everything was partly frozen or still very cold you should be fine with refreezing.
If it was room temperature for more than an hour I would toss it. Or immediately feed it.

Or have a big barbeque and invite all your neighbors!

Re: Thawed Out.
I am no expert, but I have been told that it is unhealthy to refreeze meats, this is for people, I am going to assume that if it is unhealthy for people, it wouldn't be all that good for pets, if you can get away with it, feed the thawed ones and refreeze the still frozen, and if you can avoid opening your freezer, if it is still not working, it keeps the freeze and cold longer, I have had a freezer situation, and it definitely helped to avoid opening it until it was fixed. Good luck.

Re: Thawed Out.
Bummer about the freezer!
Anything that was completely thawed for over 4 hours or so should be tossed. Unlike human food, whole rats and mice have all their internal organs and the rate of bacterial growth there is fast.
Better safe than sorry, I say: toss the thawed stuff.

Re: Thawed Out.
I agree with the Thaw tossing, just for safe keeping, I mean you wouldn't want your pets to get sick...

Re: Thawed Out.
I USED to have snakes. I must agree with and stress the importance of tossing anything that has been thawed for more than a couple of hours. If you're refreezing something that wasn't part frozen, but was cold. Make sure it was cold enough as to be barely thawed.

Re: Thawed Out.
It was all still cold, just the large rats never fully thawed. The pinkies and adult mice were still cold. The freezer had a bad problem of frosting over too. So that may have been the saving grace to keep things colder longer. We have a new one now, but I just refroze everything. I'll toss the smaller stuff and get some at Tinley.
