Uvb? Uva?
Hey my brother's got a black throat monitor and he just bought a 150w uvb light. I asked him what makes it so different from a regular zoo med 150w light?
He didn't really answer me. So I'm still trying to find out the difference and I'm also wondering if I could use a uvb light for my redtail boa and whats the advantages or disadvantages if I use one?

Re: Uvb? Uva?
The Difference is the spectrum of light being emitted. a light that says "full spectrum" may have uva rays, but does not contain uvB - which is a different kind of light - like what you would get from actually being outside as opposed to being in a room with a lot of windows. The UVB allows proper calcium processing to diurnal (day-time) reptiles.

Re: Uvb? Uva?
Pretty much!
UVB is a specific wavelength of light which is used by diurnal reptiles. It enables their skin to manufacture pre-vitamin D in their skins. They use this to metabolize the calcium in their diet. Without it they draw the calcium they need to live from their skeletal structure which weakens and disfigures the bones. This is known as metabolic bone disease. Only lights specifically designed to emit this wavelength will produce the necessary light radiation.
UVA is pretty much just a color of light.
All UVB bulbs produce UVA as well, but UVA bulbs do not produce UVB!

Re: Uvb? Uva?
If you're in doubt, check out reptileuv.com and grab yourself one of those mega ray bulbs.

Stop wasting your money on "reptile" lights for nocturnal animals. A simple house hold 150 watt bulb produces the same UV wavelengths as the 150w reptile light.
Now finding a 150 in a regular bulb might be a challenge (do they even make them?). But it could be supplemented by a ceramic heat emitter and a regular 60 watt bulb for light.

Re: Uvb? Uva?
Liz I am not sure but I don't beleive that monitors are considered nocturnal.

Re: Uvb? Uva?
No, for his redtail boa he was asking about. NOT the monitor.

Re: Uvb? Uva?
Oops!
But no the boa does not need UVB light.
It won't hurt it, but it is unnecessary.
