I'm Stumped on This One.

Ok, This may be a problem with everyone here that has feeders and such or maybe its our old house.

Heres my problem. I have little spiders in my room where my herps are and some have moved to the other areas of the house. Seeing one or two spiders don't bother me. What bothers me is that they are starting to becoming a problem. Lot of little ones and little webs here and there. It is starting to drive me nuts.

I can't use a bomb to get rid of them. In order to do that I have to remove all my animals. Thats 18 herps, and then mom has to remove the dog, cat, and the birds in the living room. So while this would be ideal if you had one or two snakes or geckos. What we have won't work. It will but will be alot of work.

So what ideas do you have for me to get rid of them?

I was thinking getting some no pest strips and putting them in a small container. Much like the treatment for mites. Seeing if that will help any. Putting one or two containers out or more.

Any ideas help. Thanks

Re: I'm Stumped on This One.

You could always let loose some bigger spiders to clear up the smaller ones

Hmm, not that I personally condone it (hehe, I have similar spiders in my bathroom....I call them all Matilda ), you could place sticky traps or something in the corners they like to hide in, and suck up as many webs as you can find with a vacuum or something. If you get every one you can find there will always be more that you missed, so just get every one. It may take several weeks or months of just destroying any web/spider you find...but after a while of that their population should go down. It could be that your house needs a deep cleaning too I know our house has boatloads of spiders. It also never gets vacuumed, swept, dusted, or organized very often. If we'd periodically clean the house more, and do a more thorough job of it, we probably wouldn't have a lot of spiders either.

One thing I've done for a semi-similar issue (dermestid beetles going after my insect collection) is take some mite killer for reptiles (the potent stuff) and put a few drops of it in the problem areas. It won't be enough to affect a whole room, but whatever corners you put it in will be very unpleasant for any invertebrates.

Sticky traps for mice and rats.... We get HUGE hobo spiders, and they decided to breed in my house so I bought sticky traps for mice and stapled them to the places the babies were hanging out.... Works wonders and its cheap and herp friendly (unless you have free roamers)

I've used those. Got a lot of them, but I have to watch out for the cat though. She's long haired and well it would be ugly, lmao. I'll try adding more of them.

I just suck up the offenders with the vacum, works for me. Keeps the spiders down. That or a free roaming gecko helps.

Re: I'm Stumped on This One.

Nate, you need a Tokay that is a free roamer. He will hunt down and eat every spider, moth, fly or other insect that enters your home. Once he is out of food, you simply need to recapture him and make him a captive. If the issue arises again in the future, simply unleashed the Tokay again. Or you can try the advise given in the previous posts.

My dad calls his spider Irving. I suspect Irving is now 20th generation spider now. He's sort of a yellow ocher color with HUGE suction cup feet.

Really, the only way is to vacuum daily all the webs you see.

Re: I'm Stumped on This One.

I keep most of my spiders, they control my ants....

The jumping spiders are all named Stanley and the ugly mean looking spiders get sucked up into the vacuum. Yeah, I discriminate.

How could you suck a cute little spider like this into the vacuum though? I just can't do it!

Re: I'm Stumped on This One.

So what your saying is I need a 55 gallon drum of DDT? LOL That will kill em. Free roamer would work if it wasn't for the cat. I guess Saturday evening I'll do a thorough cleaning after I build a new shelf.

You could always get a 55 gallon tank for the cat Be sure to use a screen lid! No UVB necessary!

I know a local pet store that closed a few years ago had a free-roaming giant day gecko to take care of loose crickets. Except the guy also had a few free-roaming cats in there from time to time, which didn't fare well for the gecko in the end...

Good luck though. You could always send a few spiders my way if you want. My bathroom still has a couple empty corners left.
