Husband Got Me
My husband and I went to a reptile show today. He got me two red eyed tree frogs and another bearded dragon. The red eyes I have for the very short time being in a 10 gallon aquarium with gravel at the bottom and eco earth on top about 3 inches deep. I also have a water fountain in there that has spring water in it and has small led lights. The temps are between 75 and 85 F humidity is 80%. So far no plants but I am going to get some asap. I am planing on making the enclosure taller by building a top on it. Any help on this matter will be appreciated. I know I've seen a place on here for plant selections but I can't find it now. Here are some pics right after being placed in their enclosures.

Re: Husband Got Me
Awww, what a cute little Bearded Dragon. When I go to pet stores I like to look at the little babies and wonder how mine grew so fast! My sister's opinion is just that, "aww look that one looks like Fitzgerald when he was cute."

Re: Husband Got Me
You can do real or fake plants for them, real is always better. Pothos is a great standard.
Here is a great care sheet for them. They are very similar to Whites in their care. You are going to want to upgrade that tank soon. Its too small.

Re: Husband Got Me
I got some live plants for them. The plants I got for them are pothos, fern, green ivy and hypoestes pink splash.
I am wanting to build on top of the enclosure, the width and length is going to be the same as the 10 gallon they are in but how tall should I make it.
I am going to the hard ware store today to get plexi glass and silicone to start building the top. I am also going to build on planters and perches for them. I don't know If this should also be considered in the hight of the enclosure. The way I plan on building the planters is on the sides and corners using plexi glass as the holders this should allow the vines to grown down and give the frogs more places to hide. Any help will be appreciated. When I am done with the building I will post pics of it.
I have read many care sheets including the one that was given to me. Some say it is okay to give meal worms others say don't because of the hard exoskeleton on them which should I follow. Right now I am feeding them gut loaded crickets and the occasional wax worm.

Re: Husband Got Me
You'll have to ask for a special glue to bond the plexiglass. Regular silicone will not adhere to it.

Re: Husband Got Me
I forgot I will need to use a light to kept the plants alive. What light can I use for the plants that won't hurt the frogs?

Re: Husband Got Me
1. light, any florescent tube will be fine for the plants and frogs. I have one as well as a 25 watt light bulb for heat.
2. How tall to make it... There are several online conversion tools out there to figure out cubic inches to gallons. Feed it a few scenarios or just take a good guesstimate. You know that if you make an exact duplicate of the bottom in size, that's 20 gallons, which is ok for 2 RETFs. Any higher is good as well. I don't think you can really have a "too high" considering in the wild they live in the jungle canopy.
Saying this you may find out that just buying a new tank is cheaper than making a top. a 29 gallon would work perfectly fine for them and used can be had for $20. If you wanted to make it tall, doing a vertical conversion is pretty easy.
3. That glue for Plexi. Its used to make custom fish tanks, so it will be fine for your frogs. Its not cheap because its designed to hold back hundreds of gallons of water. Aquarium grade silicone would work OK for stuff inside, but I'm not sure how good it will hold the topper together. I have used that silicone for a glass/plexiglass barrier for water for my toads, and its holding just fine. It also has water on one side and lots of dirt on the other, to help hold it in place. If you are using it to create the outside that needs to support the inside, I don't think its strong enough.
4. for your "up space" you want to fill it up with as much cross branches and plants as possible. For these guys, there is no point in having a tall space and then not have any branches in that space for them to use. Remember, the live in the tree canopy of costa rica. Up Up Up.
5. A healthy frog should have no problem eating and digesting a meal worm. However, i have offered them to my frogs a few times and they never eat them, so for me the debate is moot. They don't move fast enough for the frogs to see them in the first place.
