Mold

Alright I've had the 55 gallon tank set for about two weeks. And today I notice small areas of green mold. So, my question is, can the mold cause any problems with newts? Right now I have two fire belly newts in the tank until I get some skinks later. I'm also thinking that maybe if I use a small laptop fan to help circulate the air, the mold would not come back? I'm not sure. I wiped the mold away where I saw it so it's fine for now, but it will come back mostly. Any help would be nice, thanks.

Re: Mold

What was the mold growing on? I had mold growing on some drift wood that I did not properly clean before. After I spotted it, I soaked and scrubbed it in a 10/1 water bleach solution and baked in the oven for 15-30 min at 300 degrees. I placed it back into the enclosure and never seen it since (4+months).

If you need to keep your terrarium at a certain temp I wouldn't suggest using a fan, cold drafts and breezes are known to cause respiratory infections in most lizards.

hope this helps

Re: Mold

Yep its on the driftwood, the wood sits in the water so I'm guess that why it growing there and nowhere else. I'll have to try the bleach and bake idea thanks.

Re: Mold

Is the green mold in the water area or on a dry section.
Is it possible that its algae?
Did you buy the driftwood or collect it?

Re: Mold

I got the driftwood from the owner who sold me the tank. I don't know but the mold is growing just above the water and the part of wood that is stilling out of the water stay moist all the time so it could be algae? I don't know I just don't want it to harm my animals.

Re: Mold

Re: Mold

I looked up "mold growing on driftwood" and from what I've read its just algae. I think it is because the part of the driftwood that sticks out of the water stays wet because the rest is submerge underwater. I'll get pictures to post later so everyone can make their own opinion on what it is.

Re: Mold

When in doubt, take the cautions route. I'd bleach and bake.
