Howdy Guys =)
Well its been a while since I posted on here. lol
I recently got a new job at a herp pet store. The owners asked me to work there cause of the last co-worker didn't do his job right. He didnt do what he was suppose to. He fed animals in cages, never cleaned up right, etc. The biggest problem is, the feeding in the cages has all the animals thinking when the cage is opened, it's dinner time. This is mostly with the monitors. The worst one is Manson, the nile monitor. We get thick gloves and all, but Im a girl. This guy is huge and I dont like people telling me I cant do something, so I want to know if there are any good holds I can use to get him in a calm position. (So I can make his area clean.) It's going to take alot of work fixing things. The guy working for them did a good job when he started, but the past 4 months hes been slacking. He told the owners he was having personal problems. I am going to start feeding all the animals in boxes and I am going to pre-kill the rodents for the monitors. Maybe that will mellow them some. |

Re: Howdy Guys =)
If he is pretty tame then slide your hand under him. Never grab from above.
If he's skittish then it's a different story. Grab him behind the front legs(from underneath)with one hand and then pin him to your body holding the back legs. This will keep the tail from whipping too hard as well. Thye tend to watch to thrash and scratch rather than bite was grabbed. But watch out for it as well. You want to watch the back legs. When you grab him he's going to thrust them up to kick off your arm. Best to have someone help you if he's that big.

Re: Howdy Guys =)
Well in the wild if I need to catch a really really large nile, I grab the tail and let its legs get to the floor. It will either try to run away or turn and attack. Once it is tired and it lunges to bite me I wait for my moment then grab it behind the head(claws and feet away from arm...aka from top of body)....or if it is trying to get away grab behind head at will. Gloves are a must if you have bad aim
then hold the tail and neck seperetly as to keep claws away from your body...now you are in control! haha you have to post some badass pics of your monitor wrangling. congrats on the job! |
