I see one or two everyonce in awile, but never thought they would be a threat to any of my animals.
I'm in Texas, so when it's really hot and dry outside, they come into the house by the hundreds. I had some mashed banana in the crestie tank and they made there way to it and the geckos.

Re: I'm Being Invaded by Ants - Help

We use rice here, I have no earthly idea why it works, but it will kill off whole colonies of fire ants, so I would assume that it would do the same for the sugar ants. It has to be the white boxed stuff (or so I have been told). I think it is something in the preservatives, but it wiped out several mounds behind our place.

I worry a lot about them because I have seen them kill toads and I have a curious dog that loves to play with the mounds.

Other than that there is those sound things that some people swear by, but I don't know if that would drive your frogs nuts.

Try Diazinon Pest Control. It comes in a liquid and powder, powder works best!

The sonic repellents are only as good as where they're placed. Example: if you place it behind a couch or chair, the sound waves hit it and go no further. What I've used for years, and SWEAR by it is a Pest Offense. It's AWESOME for ants.

BUT you can't use it if you have certain pets in your house. Rodents and spiders are two. It's fine with Gil, and I think other reptiles, but I'd read about it before getting one.

It works similar to the sonic repellents, but it puts a pulse through the electrical system of the house. Very large houses need more than one.

I'm totally serious when I say that it works... I never have ants or mice, and since mom started using it, she doesn't either.

Worth looking into, at least!

I'm going to try this. I'm worried about the bait traps, because they eat the bait and don't die right away. They are suppose to take it back to the colony, but what if they make a detour to the frog tank first? I'll sprinkle some rice around the base of the door and i'm going to spray the outside of the house (if it ever stops raining). Maybe I"ll put some rice down by the cats bowls too, since thats where they seem to be going.

I also have spider mites again in the WTF tank which I will take care of when i get back with dry ice.

Re: I'm Being Invaded by Ants - Help

My daughter tried vinegar and water and then just sprayed her room. I think it worked because I don't hear her complaining about the ant problem anymore.

Here are a few other natural ways to deter ants that I found on the internet.

Ground Cinnamon

Go to a dollar store and buy some ground cinnamon and put it where you think the ants are coming in. You can even put it on the window sills and it won't hurt your kids or pets.

Catnip

I was investigating herb companions for my garden and came across this tidbit. Basil repels flies and mosquitoes. To deter ants, use catnip. Sprinkle it in their paths.

Glue Boards

You can buy glue boards that can be slipped under the stove or furniture. They are inexpensive and nontoxic. But you should put them where children or pets can't get at them because they are very sticky!

Spearmint

The best solution that I can offer you for ants of any kind is to build a border around your house of spearmint plants. I don't know why they don't like them, but it works. This keeps the little pests away, plus it makes entries smell great

If the ant invaders persist, try these simple measures:

Keep a small spray bottle handy, and spray the ants with a bit of soapy water.

Set out cucumber peels or slices in the kitchen or at the ants' point of entry. Many ants have a natural aversion to cucumber. Bitter cucumbers work best.

Leave a few tea bags of mint tea near areas where the ants seem most active. Dry, crushed mint leaves or cloves also work as ant deterrents.

Trace the ant column back to their point of entry. Set any of the following items at the entry area in a small line, which ants will not cross: cayenne pepper, citrus oil (can be soaked into a piece of string), lemon juice, cinnamon or coffee grounds.

Mix a half teaspoon each of honey, borox, and aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet, etc.), in small bottles. Place bottles on their sides, with lids off, in areas of most ant activity. Ants will carry the bait back to their colonies. Important: use indoors only; must be kept away from pets and children.

Leave a small, low wattage night light on for a few nights in the area of most ant activity. The change in light can disrupt and discourage their foraging patterns.

Ants on the deck? Slip a few cut up cloves of garlic between the cracks.

This also a pretty good site to look at to kill sugar ants.
