Re: New Lizard

That is correct...a bite from a full grown iguana could send you to the ER . I can suggest bearded dragons or leopard geckos...they are a more manageable size and they usually dont bite....best wishes....

Re: New Lizard

if you are really worried, most frogs don't have teeth.

Re: New Lizard

lol, the only thing im worried about in a bearded dragon, is salmenela. I have diabetes, so it would affect me twice as much.

Re: New Lizard

Almost all reptiles carry salmenela risks. You have to be conscious of using an anti-bacterial hand cleaner after each and every time to handle your pet or its enclosure. Using gloves would probably help but you may want to check with your physician to see how susceptible you would be to it.

Re: New Lizard

What Tami said. All reptiles carry salmonella. as long as you are consistent about washing your hands after you handle them or clean the enclosure, you should be OK. But I agree you should talk to your doctor.

Re: New Lizard

And salmonella, while something to be considered is not really as big a problem as some would have you beleive! As long as things are kept clean and you practice good hygene you should never have a problem.
I have kept numerous reptiles for many years and have never gotten salmonella.

Re: New Lizard

I got salmonella once... but it was from eating eggs that had runny yolks, not handling my animals. Heck, I'll eat dinner at the same time I'm bucket feeding my frogs.

Re: New Lizard

When my iguana bit me, I ended up in the ER. But when all was said and done, they put me on precautionary anti-biotics, soaked my hand in Betadine, gave me a tetanus shot and sent me home. I never developed salmonella, and within a week, the bandages were off. So it really wasn't that bad.

In general, as long as you're clean, the risk of actually contracting salmonella from a reptile is very low. Even when you get bit, keeping the wound disinfected and taking a few antibiotics usually prevents infection. The worst part about an adult iguana bite is how much it hurts initially, and the fact that you're likely to come away with permanent scars.
