Slimy Greens
Ok, once again I have to throw out greens that have turn slimy in a day! This is a pet peeve of mine, as I seem to waste a lot of greens. Has anyone tired putting green in one of the vacuumed pack bags, that you use the machine to suck the air out of? I had a co-worker who used to do this with her salads for the week and she said they were as fresh as when she sealed them. Any comments? If this would work, I could put bags together for the week and save time also.

Re: Slimy Greens
I am not quite sure why your greens go slimy so fast. Mine are good for seveal days . How are you preparing them?
I use a 1 gallon plastic icecream tub to store mine in chopped up.

Re: Slimy Greens
I have that same problem on occassion. I know I just have a fit when I go in the next day and there goes 25.00 bucks worth of greens I just bought the day before. I notice this happens to me in the winter a lot. I have no idea why.

Re: Slimy Greens
Check out your plastic bag section at walmart or the grocery store. I have seen special bags that are supposed to make them last a lot longer than normal bags. Also, have you placed a paper towel in with the greens. It will absorb lots of the excess water. Whenever I do this, my salad stuff lasts MUCH longer.

Re: Slimy Greens
We put a paper towel on the bottom of the container, load the greens, and cover with another paper towel... also, we do NOT rinse them before storing them.

Re: Slimy Greens
I use alot of paper towels, I roll out like 3 sheets, spread the greens across them, put another layer across the top and then roll them up in the towel to try to draw out all of the excess water. I usually have to change the towels once.
Also if the greens freeze you can get slimy ones, but I find that it is usually the tips of the leaves that stick out from my "greens burrito." (Also i'm just storing the rolled up greens in a plastic bag from the store with the top tied.) I also make sure to pick out the ugly looking greens and feed them to the super worms or the compost pile to keep them from making the other greens get nasty.

Re: Slimy Greens
I think a lot of the problem is that being winter we don't get the best greens here in Michigan. Many times I walk out without any at all, but cause I know they won't last a day. It seem that the stores have their sprinklers on all the time and the greens are dripping wet. Other time they are frozen, in the store. This is just frustrating and expensive like Nicole said. I'll have to try using more paper towels...
May Spring come soon, so we can plant them outside!!!!

Re: Slimy Greens
I never have a problem, but then I do not prepare them all when I first buy them. I leave them in the bag they are bought in and clean and chop what I need each day. I have noticed that mustard greens tend to discolor within 5 days or so, all others seem fine.

Re: Slimy Greens
In the meantime, why not try Reptigreens?
