Mega Ray Questions...

Okay i'm FINALLY going to convert to mega-rays, I decided i'd switch when I moved, which was supposed to be about a year ago and then a lot of things happened and so we are moving now and i'm going to stop using the 10.0 48'' bulbs and get megaray lights for the iguana cage and the bearded dragon, but I don't know what I need.

Iguana cage = 6 feet long, 4 wide and 4 tall (I'll be cheating and putting it up on a set of book cases so he will still be high, he just wont have 3 feet of lower space that he wont use.[also his cage door is always open so he can free roam])

Bearded dragon cage = 5 feet long, 18 inches high, 18 inches deep, glass front, 1/2 inch screen top.

I have no idea what i'm looking for, if I need EB's or SB's and what wattage.

Right now the iguana has two 48in 10.0's and a human heating pad he sleeps on plus 2 heat lamps, i think one is a 100watt 130volt flood light (my house is odd it runs at 127 volts rather than 120 so my electrician boyfriend insists I use 130v bulbs, but this shouldnt be a problem in the next place.) and the other is a 100w 120v incandescent bulb. We really fight to keep the temps right with this set up.

The bearded dragon has 1 48" 10.0 uvb bulb and two 75w 130v bulbs and one 60w night light. We have no heat issues with him.

Also we keep the ambient temp in the room around 74 degrees but I foresee that number being a little lower in the new place because we will be paying the heating bill.

Re: Mega Ray Questions...

Well with the iguana cage you could use either the SB or the EB because of the height. The EB kits don't produce any heat, so keep that in mind. The SB kits do provide heat.

If the iguanas basking area is between 12 and 16 inches from where the bulb would be, you could choose between the 60 watt EB (not the low) or the 100 watt sb. If the basking area is closer to 18-20 inches, you could use the 160 watt sb.

For the Bearded Dragon tank, I would go with the 100. Since the tank is 18 inches, and you likely have something for the dragon to bask on, that would be most adequate. The ideal height from the 100 watt would be around 12 inches. That will offer some great UV exposure.

Hope this helps.

Re: Mega Ray Questions...

Thank you Rich, right now to get the right temps in the dragon tank he's got a very tall basking spot made of a stack of slate. I could adjust to make it work.

The iguana cage is still open to change because we haven't tipped it on its side yet so I can put the basking shelf where I want it, i'll probably put it down lower because Dizzy likes to stand on his back legs and try to hang from the screen on the top so it sounds like the 160w SB might be the way to go.

Would one be enough or should I have 2 to cover more space? I'm still going to have the fluorescent fixture in the cage, but i'm not going to worry about updating the bulbs unless I find a good deal.

Re: Mega Ray Questions...

I chatted with lacey earlier and answered this question already, but one would be sufficient though 2 wouldn't hurt pending Dizzy has a place to escape the UV if he wants to get away.

Re: Mega Ray Questions...

Good info Rich... I just ordered a set of Mega Rays for Zoe as well...

I got the 160 SB and the heat emitter... I hope this will be better for her in a 6x5x4 cage...
