Asian Long Tail Lizard

I have a question for anyone who may be able to help. I have a terrarium that I keep a variety of tree frogs in. I recently have taken interest in lizards and decided to add an aisan long tail to my terrarium. He is just adorable but he has picked the highest point in the terrarium to hang out and will not come down. not even to eat. I am beginning to worry. I have had him for a week now and he hasnt explored his environment yet. He was housed with frogs at the pet store and the temp in the terrarium is good...anyone have any ideas? Thank you

Re: Asian Long Tail Lizard

i'm not really familiar with that type of lizards but I can tell you from experience in having worked in a pet store that just because you see a pet store doing something like putting two different types of animals together doesn't mean that its right or beneficial to the animals. it may be that the temps and humidity needs of the lizard are different than the frogs or that the frogs are stressing out your lizard. you may have to seperate them for the health of all critters involved. especially since there's the possibility of the lizard passing on parasites to your frogs or the frogs passing on parasites to your lizard if neither have been quarantined. in case you haven't already, you may want to look up the needs of both types of animals and see if maybe something is not working out in your current enclosure. good luck! maybe someone else will be able to provide more information for you.

it also may be that when an animal is brought into a new environment they take about a week to get used to the surroundings. are the frogs eating before the lizard gets a chance to?

it might help the others here try to figure it out if you were to tell us how your enclosure is set up, how big it is, the temps, humidity, etc and what kind of frogs they are.

Re: Asian Long Tail Lizard

In general, it's a bad idea to house two different species. Most of the time these creatures have very different care. But even when their care is similar, you run the risk of diseases, which one species might be immune to but carriers of, spreading to the other species.

Along with that, most reptiles are solitary in the wild. They don't live in groups and are territorial. Thus, housing them together, even with their own species is not a good idea. They often stop eating or behaving normally, or will even fight.

Try separating them for awhile. It's a good idea to quarantine the new animal for at least 30 days anyway. See how well they do on their own. It may be better to keep them separate permanently.

Re: Asian Long Tail Lizard

I wouldn't even house 2 types of frogs together, much less a lizard and a frog. Both animals are going to stress each other out, and someone is going to end up dead.
