Turtle/Tortoise ID Help!

My cousin got a turtle or tortoise under really strange circumstances and doesn't even know what it is, here's her email to me:

Quote:
a lady gave this to one of our plumbers for a thank you for working at her house....weird....we have no idea what kind it is. it has red eyes.....strange and no color that i can see. just brown colors. it has this weird little flap too. here are some pictures.

Hopefully someone can help because I am no good with most ID's...Also she's living in Austin TX if you want to look into native species.

Re: Turtle/Tortoise ID Help!

arent the box turtles the only ones with the flaps to be able to totally enclose themselves in their shell like that? I had an Eastern box turtle in here the year before last that did that, Sorry I am not much help,, I think it is some kind of box turtle though.

Re: Turtle/Tortoise ID Help!

I believe it to be a three toed box turtle

And in Texas they want tyou to leave them alone and not remove them from the area. They ask that you report any sightings and have a database of Box turtles sightings

Re: Turtle/Tortoise ID Help!

That was my guess on the 3 toed box turtle. Time to call natural resources.
