Age does have a lot to do with it. If he was talking about a 4-5 y/o, how responsible would they be? In addition to that, the fact that in a few years she would be possibly going off to school somewhere, most dorms won't allow pets or if they do it has to be fish and has to be less than 10 gal. So that would limit what to get to something with a shorter life span....

My daughters ran into the college problem this year, dorm rooms usually only allow a 10 gallon or less with harmless fish in it. All of their reptiles are living at home with me and their sisters and dad. They were very bummed about that. They do work with reps at college though. So there decision for campus was a couple of betta fish, called Herman and Koolaid. at 15 she may or may not be responsible enough to take care of a reptile, but ultimately Kris will be responsible for the day to day. In a 10 gallon there's not a lot you can do. We did put a 10 gallon cage top on top of a 10 gallon so it was then a 20. It gave more climbing space, but they grow out of that fast also.

Leo is definitely the best way to go - easy to look after, can handle, not messay or smelly and they come in some pretty cool varieties now - have fun.
