Recycling/Disposing of broken tank?

Our Blue-Tongued Skink, Garek, passed away a while ago, and we are not planning to reintroduce a new reptilian friend.
We'd like to remove his tank from our front hall, but it has a large crack in the bottom that was patched and sturdy, but renders it not ideal for reuse, or something we would feel OK about selling/giving to another reptile owner.

Does anyone have any ideas for what to do with our tank?

call your local recycling center and see if they take flat glass.

You might still try putting it on craigslist under 'free stuff' and explain that the bottom is cracked and isn't safe unless repaired. Some people would love to jump at the chance for a free tank that only needs the bottom replaced. I'm sure a peice of plywood could help things out.

As long as you are up front about the condition you have no reason to be hesitant about passing the tank on. A cracked bottom is a fairly simple fix and many herpers or rodent keepers would be delighted to have it. Our local herp shop routinely takes in and sellls broken of leaking tanks.
And it beats having it end up in a landfill!

Yeah, I'd say sell it or give it away, just be honest about the tank and mention it's only good for keeping reptiles or rodents. I'd LOVE a large free tank, cracked or not! Several of my current tanks have cracks in the bottom, but they still work just fine, as long as I don't keep fish

That was my initial thought as well. A piece of luan would work fine as well. It would be ideal for just about any reptile (pending the enclosure size is adequate) once an artificial floor has been inserted.

Re: Recycling/Disposing of broken tank?

um- yha- any reptile rescue in the world would love to have it- we have a whopping 2 tanks here (out of... 40 or so) that are NOT cracked....
I regularly give tax recipts out for tanks- broken or not!! I've had some that were missing sides- we stick a piece of plexie on and if we don't have glue- we tape them. I have some really tacky looking tanks with tape on them but when you need cages as badly as we do- i'll take what I can get!!!

donate it!!!

Re: Recycling/Disposing of broken tank?

You can allways strip out the silicone, replace the broken piece and seal it back up. Then you'd have something worth selling.
