Taming Babies

Here I have a new baby Brazilian Rainbow Boa, it will be a week this Wed, i had her out this last sat to show a friend and used a towel when handling as she strikes and then gets tangeled up in it so off she went back in her 10 gallon/
Some say a few days and others a week for handeling and feeding. She will nip as to be expected i wait and will place a fresh pinkie in with her tonight and get that over with, it's been the 5th since her last meal from the breeder and she shed that Wed when she arrived. Any tips on what to use when handeling her, so she won't get caught up when striking? And don't say let it bite me, i don't want marks all over me and yet I won't budge when she does strike. Any taming skills that worked for you?

One thing you can do to improve your chances is to use a hook or crook to lift him out of his enclosure, and then handle him. Our female Irian Jaya was very nippy as a little one in her home, but settled down almost instantly when taken from her enclosure.

Also, I know you dont want to hear it, but you'll probably have to get nipped a few times. After they've learned you're not a threat and are more comfortable with you, they should settle down. Another thing, in my experience, snakes tend to mellow with age. So even if yours is a nipper for now, there's hope he'll calm down into a gentleman as he ages.

Hope this helps a bit, good luck with him.

Most will settle down with age, one trick is to wear rubber dishwashing gloves. you won't feel the strike and they seem to not like the taste. Best of luck

The hook idea is a good one. Snakes feel threatened when approached from above. That's where most of their enemies are. Anything that you can do to approach them from the side instead of from above will help.
