Please help!! black lights?
Hello again,
I am hoping someone can help me with a huge difference of opinion I am having with a neighbor guy down the street from me, about black lights for reptiles. here is the difference of opinion we are having: He argues that any black light from any store is safe to use for reptiles, I argue NO, I took him to a website that I found on Google that explained that they are not Ok to use on reptiles, and that they are even damaging. They went into a huge scientific description that explained why. I myself, did not bother to try to decipher all the scientific termanolgy as it did not matter to me ( science was not one of my better subjects ) the bottom line was they said no and thats all I needed to know.He argues that it wont matter if used for a short period of tyime for a leopard gecko Would someone please throw me a bone here and put it in english as to why they are not ok , apparantly he does not believe me or the website. help help help please! ![]() |

Okay the black lights that make things glow are not safe, but the incandescent bulbs with the blue/black glass that jsut give off light and aren't UV reactive are fine to use for night viewing/heating purposes, but most people stick with Ceramic Heat Emitter's so there is not light at all.

Nicole the main reason that the commercial "make it glow" black lights are not safe for use with reptiles is they do not put out enough visible light to cause the pupils to react and dilate to protect the eye. This allows the eyes to become damaged by being burned.
