Stupidity strikes...

Ok, so from now on, y'all can call me stupid...lol. I went on a routine run to the pet shop today, which turned rather unusual. They had recently gotten in a "shipment" of reptiles. Now, this is where the stupidity comes in...
I decided to take a little look at the reptiles and saw a baby iguana. It was in a rather small cage with one little stick to climb on, a tiny bowl of water and a little bit of dried lettuce. It had a little red heat lamp about 2 feet above the tank centered in one corner. The little guy was hovered in the corner trying to get as much heat as possible. So, I felt horrible! I came home and got to thinking and called the manager and talked to him and then I spoke with my fiance, who told me to go get him. So, here I sit, asking y'all for some help and advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed! You have a lot of learning to do quickly! Iguanas are a very complicated animal to keep.
I would also advise picking up James Hatfield's book Green Iguana the Ulimate Owners Manual. It looks imposing but its a very easy read and its the best book out there.
And get ready to build a BIG cage!

I've done a little bit of reading and know that he's gonna need a big cage, same with our Chinese Water Dragon...so we're already making plans. They're both babies at the moment though, so we should have a little bit of time.

The ig is going to need a larger cage than the waterdragon and you cannot keep them in the same cage. The ig will kill the WD. The iguana is going to quickly outgrow the WD.
And the iguana will be big quicker than you think and is a serious challenge.
We will help all we can.

I know I can't house them together...I figured this much! All I was trying to say is that we're going to be starting a project very soon anyways, so doubling it wouldn't be as bad as doing it all again at a later time. This way, we can at least have everything bought and all. I also know that Iguanas get pretty big, even compared to a water dragon, who could reach 3 feet. I've done a little bit of reading on the subject, just today, but am still learning. I also realize that I should've considered everything before getting him, but I just couldn't leave him in the state he was in when we're financially stable enough to care for him. All I need now is knowledge...which the internet is going to help me get. And you all if willing!

Relax,..I wasn't slamming you and I am sorry if you thought I was. When you have done this as long as I have you see the same scenarios arise time and again, just trying to possibly save you some grief before it got to that stage.
And of course we are willing to help you!

It's alright...although I did take it that way, I guess. I realize that I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to herps, but I am learning. I'm not one to hold a grudge or anything either, so no hard feelings! I would appreciate any help or advice you're willing to give though!!!

no one ever listens to Lacey's advice...

Welcome to ig-slavery. It's generally very expensive, very trying and minimally if at all rewarding.

Just remember that every iguana purchased perpetuates the cycle. That's why I stay away from petstores. It's so hard to leave them in that condition.

I am sorry Lacey, but working with iguanas for the last ummmm 13 yrs has been very rewarding to me. I have facilitated iguana adoptions for about 2 or so years now and when one finally finds a great home, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. And I also find giving the proper advice to a new iguana owner very rewarding because I know if they follow the advice, they will be all set with their ig for 25 yrs.....

I wouldnt call anything stupidity, but there is a lot to learn. Proper feeding and UVB are the biggest obstacles to get over. If you have any specific questions, let us know! And congrats on your new little guy!!!!
