working with iguanas for the last ummmm 13 yrs has been very rewarding to me
I whole heartedly agree. There is something about establishing a social relationship with such a majestic animal that can't be described if you haven't experienced it.
NOW,...
that said,...
Iguanas are NOT for everyone! They require a huge investment in time, energy and money. But for those of us who are bonafide ig slaves it's worth it. I have shared my life with several iguanas and most likely aways will.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a pet.

You'll probably find that your Water Dragon will be a lot gentler and sweeter. He'll allow you to do a lot more things, that the ig will call you on. Your Iguana will probably be more temperamental and less social.

If you're looking for a pet who's going to love you back and be eager to be handled and be around you, it's probably not going to be particularly satisfying for you. But, if you like designing the cage, and buying things that will make him more comfortable, and watching him climb around and eat, and sit with you quietly while you read or watch a movie, you'll love them both. (Water dragon's are GREAT for reading books with. I used to read to mine sometimes, and he responded really well. A quiet voice and a steady rhythm is apparantly very soothing.)

Pet stores and I don't get along. I like the ones that are pet supply stores the best. Remember that you can't rescue every animal. If you see them in bad conditions, it's better to call the aspca, or local animal control groups. Buying them just tells the pet store that's it's doing a good job and they'll never change their husbandry techniques.

Hopping off my soapbox now, I just wanted to let you know that I think it's admirable that you are doing research and that you realize that this could be an expensive animal, and are willing to spend your time and money on it. A lot of people buy an animal, then end up killing it prematurely or getting rid of it because they weren't willing to go the distance. It's good to see someone who really wants to learn and do the right thing.

He is beautiful...for sure! I finally touched him today for the first time...my fiance is the one who's been handling him. He's a little sketchy, and very observant. He tends to flare that "dewlap" thingy if you get to close, but hasn't tried to bite or swat us with his tail yet. He's just a baby though, so there's still plenty of time for that! I managed to get ahold of a list online of foods that they generally eat...so I'll be making a trip to the store tonight for that. I'm also going to invest in a good UVB bulb tomorrow...we have one now, but it kinda sucks. I really do appreciate all the help and advice though!

If you don't mind, please post the diet you are looking at.
Some of the online lists are great and some are really bad.
