ice storm may cause power to go out!

I am mostly worried about my lizards (Tokay, leo, hermies) They won't have heat unless I can carry their tanks down to the basement where the fire stove is. What would you all do. I can easily do the 20 Long leo tank...but the 150 gal tokay and 30 HEAVY gallons of hermies will be difficult! I can catch Trouble the tokay and put him in the extra 20 gallon I have which would work, but the crab tank is WAY HEAVY! It would also be hard to control the amount of heat if it does come to that. so I guess I should be more prepared...I didn't excpectt hings to get this bad the storm was supposed to be over and it seems to have gotten worse!

I wish I would have gotten those hat hands ya know the ones us hunters use it would have at least kept a spot warm...I would have wrapped it of course to prevent burns. I haope everything willbe ok, but the lights are flickering!

eek what an awful siduation! i'd say get the tokay in the smaller tank and bring it and the leo's tank down. i dont know anything about hermies... but could they go into a pillow case untill power comes back? have no idea if that's a real possability or not...
also, you could make a impromptu rice bag... throw some rice into a pillowcase, tie, and put in the microwave for 3-4 minutes... should stay warm for a while at least. used to heat up all my rice bags whenever I heard power was going to go out. good luck!

You can always use the sterilite totes for just a temp basis, if it will keep them warm downstairs, I'm sure they wont mind a smaller area for a bit.

I agree. put them in smaller containers. It won't hurt them to be cooped up for a while. They are shipped all over the world in small containers.

Since you have a wood stove, another option is to get styrofoam ice chests and, using the stove, heat water and put it in plastic soda bottles and put container and bottle in the ice chest. Place a towel between the water bottle and the animal and make sure that it doesn't get too hot in the container. I have used this method for transporting animals to the vet in the cold.
This will keep a warm temperature for some time. And with 2 sets of bottles you can add another one when the one in use cools down.

+)~ THANKS SO MUCH for the info! Thankfully the power stayed on! I got really scared when the lights started to flicker!

I think the lizards would have been fine with moving them in a small temp home till the storm passed, but the crabs would prove difficult: they are under molting: can't be disturbed and I would ahve a hard time moving the tank without caving in the molting hole>BUT I think the heated rice or water bottles would have done well! I think now (if it happens again) I will be more prepared! I am just so glad it didn't come to that! YIKES! =)

you know it would have been worse off if I didn't even have a wood stove for warmth! I guess next time I won't panic AS MUCH!

I'm happy to hear everything worked out for you. Ice storms can be scary. You never know how many hours or even days the power will be out.

I'm glad to hear you rode out the storm without problem. We don't realize how much we depend on things being there at the flip of a switch until we lose it!

That is one of the hazards we face as keepers of animals that require artificial warmth.
A couple of years ago we had the mother of all ice storms come through here. Powerlines, power poles and large trees were down all over the state and many people were without power for days, and some for weeks!
I woke up that morning and it was 50 degrees in my apartment. Kathy and I threw on sweats and were grabbing everything and stuffing them inside our clothes. The snakes didn't seem to mind it too much but Zok, the iguana, was none too happy about it and demonstrated her dislike!
Yep, she "went" all over me!
We were calling everyone we knew and shuffling cages around to whoever still had power!
Fortunately in the house where I now live I have gas heat.
So unless both gas and electric go out I am in pretty good shape(knock on wood!)
