Iguanas tail keeps coming off :(
When I got my iguana about a half an inch of his tail was gone, and ever since I got him, it would grow back about a quarter of an inch, and then boom, it would disappear and I would see his tail bleeding. it just happened about 5 mins ago, I just finished cleaning it up and stuff. the problem is, i never find the piece of it to maybe determine what could be making this happen.
When I let him free roam, theres no sharp edges, i never pick him up or grab him by the tail either...why does this keep happeneing? he doesnt whip me much either, just likes to run away though. speedy little fella he is. |

Is the tail black or dark on the end? it sounds like the tip my be necrotic and he keeps breaking the dead tissue off. The tip of my iguanas tail was necrotic, our solution was to break it off above the line where the dead part met the live part.
My best advice would be to take him to a vet. You should do that anyways for a general check up and so you can build up a good rapport with the vets office. |

yeah I had the same problem with my ig. I ended up having to go back to the vet constantly for about 9 months till it cleared up.

There is no reason a peice of the tail should just fall off. Is the end of the tail getting a dried up shriveled and darker look to it or is it only the regrowth that is falling off?
I too suspect there may be some necrosis involved.

The regrowth will be dark and sort of rubber looking. Unless the ig is really wild and does a lot of tail slapping and keeps breaking it, it shouldn't just fall off. There may possibly be some infection that is attacking the new growth. only a herp vet could tell you for sure.
Can you get a good picture of the end of the tail?
