You could try using baking soda to get the smoke film off of the glass, I would think it might work since it is mildly abrasive.
Once everything is settled you might have a vet listen to his breathing and make sure that it sounds normal.

i've calmed down alot about nietszche, he's been drinking water, he's stretched out in the loaner tank and watches us move around the room like he normaly does. i've been keeping a close eye on him still, he hasnt been breathing threw his mouth, and i've seen no drool or anything, so i'm feeling alot more hopefull. i am gunna call the vet tomarow just to see if there's anything else I should be looking out for. i'm hoping he'll be able to go back into his real tank tomarow, and after that i'm just gunna leave him alone for 2 weeks, let him calm down a bit. that'll give me some time to get more food for him aswell, so one he re-adjusts he can eat... i was gunna feed him yesterday but change of plans! i had just re-stocked on rats too! ::grumbles::

Wow I am so sorry to hear about your experience, it must have been terrible for you and I can only sympathise with how you must be feeling. You may feel bad for some time, but i'm glad you and your friend got out unharmed and what's more you got Nietszche out too.

With regards to Nietszche, I would suggest you try and take him to a vet just for a once-over. When humans inhale a considerable amount of smoke we tend to be checked over to make sure there are no ill side effects, the same consideration should be given to your snake.

I hope you get things right sooner rather than later, a fire is perhaps one of the worst nightmares we can have and to actually experience it must be devastating. I can't imagine how we would get all the animals out if the same ever happened to us, but I think it's wonderful that you thought of Nietszche first to make sure you got him out safely. It's a sad fact that some people are insensitive and selfish, but hopefully all the onlookers weren't that bad. Hopefully most of the things you had can be replaced by insurance?, some things are irreplacable I know, but the three main things got out of that fire ok. Best of luck with everything.

I'm glad both of you are safe and sound. Just had someone set a fire in a horse barn here last week. After setting the fire the door was bolted all 18 horses died. So sad. They figure it was kids as they went up and down the road setting fires on porches etc.

thank you all for your kind words...
i spoke with the vet today, she basicaly told me to keep doing what i'm doing, and if god forbid I do see any changes, nose discharge, breathing threw the mouth, anything like that then he is defonitioly going to the vet. ofcorse i'd like to take him now just to be sure, but included in the things that were destroyed was my cashed paycheck and bank card. needless to say i'd have to borrow money to have him seen by a vet, atleast untill I can get squared away with the bank and get payed again. insurence will be covering none of our loss, as none of us can afford any.
the vinager water worked great for the glass, i ended up just replacing everything else tho. couldnt get the smoke residue to go away.

and for those of you interested in reading the official report-
http://ithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.d...609180322/1002

**but for the record, red cross didnt do a THING for us. infact, they didnt evin show up to the fire untill 2 hours later, and then wandered around talking to spectators for 20 MINUTS before they noticed the two people WITH NO SHOES ON! and they most certanitioly did NOT give us a place to stay. also, i appologise for my rant here, but I cant stand it when credit is givin to morons who didnt do a thing.**

Glad you all were ok

It will probably be the case that your snake did not inhale anywhere near as much smoke as you and your housemate did, they have the ability to hold their breath for ages....I have witness some of our snakes fully submerge in their water bowls for what seems like an eternity (prob 20-30mins) without surfacing for air.... I imagine they could do the same in a fire situation like yours.

Glad you went to the vet and that everything seems ok
