Roughneck monitor has a bad burn..

A few weeks ago I came home from work to find my monitor in his pool laying on his water heater(his pool is about 15 gallons) I picked him up right away of course to find that he had been burned pretty bad. At this point I didnt take him to the vet, I just put him in a hosiptal tank and soaked him in a betadine/water mixture 2-3 times a day for about half an hour. He finally healed up fully maybe 3 days ago, but naturally the skin isnt very tough so I was planning on keepign him in the hospital tank for another 2 weeks to give his skin some time to toughen up but I came home from work yesterday to find he had been put back in his regualr enclosure, and guess were he was? No other then on the heater again...this time his burn is much worse but I have antibiotics from my vet, Ill be soaking him in betadine/water 2times a day and putting the ointment my vet gave me on it...any suggestions as to what I can do to help ease the pain of his burn, and possibly speed up healing?

I don't know about that, but the first thing you need to do is put some sort of shield around or over the heater so your monitor cannot possibly come in contact with it again.

Sav, definitely do something to make the heater safer. What you did on the first burn seemed to work well. If it looks like serious tissue damage you might want to make a vet trip. Good luck.

Have you considered getting a different heater?

Also, sometimes reptiles mill about all over a localized heat source (ie your water heater) if the ambient temps or basking temps aren't high enough. Are you sure your temps are good? I know I've seen some of my skinks hanging out on the undertank heaters (which aren't hot enough to burn) if the amient temps aren't high enough. Perhaps an increase in the wattage of your basking bulb would help; it would increase the basking temps and the ambient temps elsewhere in the cage.

His basking temps get up to 130 deg and his ambient temp is around 90, Im prolly gonna take it out, seeing as I cant trust someone to put the barrier back up...

That's pretty darn hot! Guess it's not a coldness problem. I'm no monitor expert so I'll just keep my mouth shut on the proper temps for that thar creature of yers.

Step one: go outside and find a peice of broken cinderblock and put it in the oven at 250 until the boyfriend gets home.
Step Two: Hit the boyfriend in the head with it the next time you see him.
Step Three: Talk to your vet about getting some silvadine cream if you haven't already gotten it.
I wish you the best of luck and I am confident in your abilities, so be sure to keep us updated.

ROFL..Laceyy I like the way you think! Vet gave me Silvadine cream and antibitoics so we will see..he did heal up really quickly the first time but he is young and it really shoulnt take him too long to heal since hes growing so fast, Im also paying special attention to his diet, trying to get the right amount of the right stuff in him, I think that has alot to do with it
