Some starter help needed please?
Hi all,
I am going to pick up my hatcling cali King on friday (so excited i'm all over the place lol) and I was wandering if you guys could help me out with the stuff that I would need etc. At the minute it is still in its hatchling box.....should I keep it in this until its too big for container or should I transfer it straight away into a large Exo Terra Faunarium or the viv I have for it? The question I have is if I need to keep it in hacthling box how would I heat it? i would of thought a heat mat would be too hot for him as its only a plastic container! Any help you guys can come up with I would really appreciate as I do not wanna get it wrong! I will post some pics when I get it to! Thanks Cali |

I would move it into its vivarium. What size viv do you have? Just make sure you have pleanty of hides for it in there if you use aspen or news paper it should burry itself under them to feel safe.

I have a 3ft viv, i just thought this would be a bit too big for it as its only 4 weeks old. I was going to use aspen bedding as I have heard good things about it! Thanks for help I appreciate it!

If I were you, I'd consider keeping it in the Faunarium for a few weeks with paper towel as a substrate: quarantine! (I know it's just a hatchling, but it could still have mites or internal parasites.)
I recommend sending the first stool sample you get from him to the vet for a check. If you find anything, you'll be happy not to have to sterilize the bigger terrarium. If you don't find mites and no internal bugs, then it's fine to move him to the larger tank. As Aiden said, you want to make sure it has plenty of places to hide. I recommend a small hide on the warm side, one on the cool side and a moss box somewhere in the middle.

Yeah I think he'll tell you if he doesn't seem comftorable in something so big (they have their ways). And if he does which I doubt...you can always partition half of the place off to make it smaller...But mine likes a lot of roaming space. Do you know what kind of substrate you are going to be using? Anyway I would suggest when you first get him you might want to keep him in the container for a while just to monitor that he's healthy. And Sunbeam heating pads seem to be popular for heating...I believe you can get ones with dimmers so you can change the temp. If you want to get really serious about it get a thermostat...you can buy reptile ones online so you can plug whatever your using into the thermostat and it stays at whatever temp you tell it to.

Thanks guys!
I have a couple of options for substrate I was either going to use aspen bedding or vivarium carpet. i think I might start out with aspen so the little one can hide and burrow to his little hearts content and then when older and very settled I might change over to the carpet. however if he likes the aspen i'll stick with that! These sunbeam heating pads do you know if they are available in england? Thanks again for your advice guys and gals I appreciate it! |
