Question Bought a CHE but No Warmer Ambiant Air Temps, is This Normal?

Hi guys, i just bought a zoo med 100w Ceramic Heat Emitter today. I have it on and the ground temps are 95 but the ambiant air temps in the hot area are around 80. is this normal? i was using the red heat light and that gave off way better air temps. Its in my ball pythons set up, 40 gal breeder tank. do i need to move up to the 150w?

well, what were the ambient air temps before you installed the Ceramic Heat Emitter? did it just not raise the temps as high as you expected? i am using a 60 watt for my 35 gallon roach bin and it raised the temps about 18 deg.
im not quite sure i understand what you mean be the ground temps.. you mean the the "floor" of the enclosure underneath the Ceramic Heat Emitter is at 95? if so then im pretty sure its normal for the surface directly under it to heat up quite a bit . if that is too hot for you then can you possibly raise the Ceramic Heat Emitter higher up in the enclosure so it is not so close to the ground?

Yes i was refering to the floor. the ground temps are great but it doesnt seem to warm up overall air temps for some reason. kinda strange.

that is strange. do you have the top covered with a solid lid or is it a screen/mesh type lid? and are you using an all glass tank? well those factors would cause some heat loss but not so much that you wouldnt see a change in the temps i dont think..
maybe you could try uprgading to a higher wattage one? just to see if there is any difference..

i have a screen lid/glass tank. i just find it weird that a light bulb gives off better ambiant air temps. i know if i go to the 150w the floor temps may get to hot for a ball python. im so tired of going to the pet store lol

well before you go to the pet store and get the higher wattage one i would try covering a good portion of the screen lid, and maybe even "insulate" the sides and back of the tank with cardboard, a background, blanket, etc. whatever works for you.
is the Ceramic Heat Emitter sitting on top of the lid, or hanging inside the tank?

Ok call me crazy but all my temps are correct now, thank God! it must have taken some time for the Ceramic Heat Emitter to warm up. oh by the way the Ceramic Heat Emitter is on the lid

lol glad its working out for you now. they do take some time to heat up the ambient air in the enclosure. i was under the impression that you had it running for awhile.

Yes, they take some time to get to full warming strength. I find my frog enclosure takes about 2 hours to slowly warm up to temps. But that's good, you don't want to make the temps too warm too fast.

I would cover up the lid with some wood. All your heat is going right out the top! I have a 70 gallon tank, but with its wood top and insulated sides, I only need a 75 watt Ceramic Heat Emitter with the thermostat on LOW to heat it to 85.
