Heat Lamps
Im in the end stages of building a huge wd enclosure... and I have to put the heat lamps inside the enclosure (they have screens of course so my wd doesnt get burned) (and its a duplex enclosure and my burm cage is on top) But I was wondering how far away from the top of the enclosure, that the ceramic diffusers on top of the heat lamp need to be away from the top, so I dont cause a fire... anyone have that info hanging around (Id go read the boxes at the pet store, but thats a challenge with 3 kids)
THANK YOU in advance!!

Re: Heat Lamps
I am a little confused in the question, lol. You have ceramic heat emitters on top of a heat lamp
![]() In the cages I have built (should I say my hubby, lol) they are hard wired into the cages (ceramic light fixtures) mounted to the top of the cage with a 4 inch dead air space between the bottom and the top cages. I have Grizzly in the bottom with his Uvb, daylight, and nightime bulbs, This heat rises into the dead air space and transfers to the cage above, minimizing the amount of heat emitters I have to use in the upper snake cage that holds Wing. so I hope that helps you and your question. It is hard to know without seeing a picture of what you are building. Just remember that ceramic heat emitters put off a lot of heat as do the mercury vapor bulbs, so always allow more room between the two cages that you think you need, better to be safe than sorry ![]()

Re: Heat Lamps
Thank you Nicole, to better clairify my question, the ceramic diffusers are located at the top of the heat lamp, that (usually) the cord comes out of...
Unfortunatly, I didnt have any say in the design of the cage... A guest of ours decided that he would attemp to build a cage I had plans setting out for (they werent done) But so I have a cage... That has no spare room for the heat lamps own little space... Frustrating... But I was thinking of building wire mesh boxes for the heat lamps... Hung by a small chains... Im not sure yet... If anyone has some ideas, please share Thanks again....

Re: Heat Lamps
I understand, You mean the ceramic socket. I would guess that you a puting them in a wood cage, corret? I would suggest using a tile with a hole drilled in to space the socket from the wood. This will defuse the heat trasfered by conduction from the socket head. Or a easier solution is to find widebase sockets. A few reptile shops here sell them I've used them placed directly in wood cages, they stay a good deal cooler than the standered ceramic socket.

Re: Heat Lamps
Just wondering what you're using for UVB? A good way to go is with the Mercury Vapour bulbs from Welcome To ReptileUV - Mega-RayŽ UVB lamps for reptile lighting worldwide . You get heat and UV in one fixture.

Re: Heat Lamps
Titus... Wonderful Idea about the ceramic tile!!! Thank you!!! And as far as uvb goes I tried ordering a mega ray, but they refunded my credit card and apologized for the inconvienence... they didnt give a reason... So Im using two 18'' florecent uvb 10.0 ... Id use the 7.0 5.0, but I needed something so my lizard wasnt 7'' from the top of the cage at all times...
Im going to upgrade to a 4' light and fixture, and then put the 18'' at the bottom of the cage to get better uvb....

Re: Heat Lamps
That's odd. I would send them an email asking what's up with the product.
