Bulb suggestion
My son put his geckos back in 10 gallons. He is not able to get the tanks up to the heat they were this Summer. Not sure why since he did used the lights even when it was hot inside. He is using clamp lamps. He wants to put them back in the 20 gallon highs. Any suggestion on bulb or wattage?

Re: Bulb suggestion
How many are in the 10 gl. They need to be in a 20 leopard gecko. Its easier to get temps right. Is he using and under the tank heater of any kind?

Re: Bulb suggestion
The farther away the lamp is from their basking spot, the more wattage they need. I should think, though, that in a 20 g tank, they wouldn't need more than 100 watts. You can get a few different wattage bulbs from a hardware store, (which is much cheaper and just as good) and start experimenting.
Also, you may want to invest in an under tank heater or a human heat pad to put under the tank. That will help raise the temperatures inside the tank as well.
But a 10g tank is really not good to keep them in, especially if he is keeping them together.

Re: Bulb suggestion
It was the guages. The following morning before he turn the heat on the guage was showing several degrees lower then the room tempature. Unless that is possible? If so let me know.

Re: Bulb suggestion
What sort of thermometer are you using? some of them are notoriously inaccurate.

Re: Bulb suggestion
I have to agree with Merlin. If you're using those circular gauges it will be an inaccurate reading. I can't see how it would be possible that the tank is cooler than the room.

It is possible.
If the heat in the room has recently come on. Cold air settles and warm air rises. Unless there is a lot of air movement in the room it will take a little bit for the air in the tank to warm up, particularly if there are a lot of fixtures that have to be heated up as well.
But I would still double check those thermometers.

Re: Bulb suggestion
LOL Many years of motorcycle riding taught me about that!
Riding along nice and comfy and then go down into a lower area and it got COLD!
