New to the fam.....

I couldn't help it. My daughter and I were out and about and wandered into a pet store. (Gasp.....) Of course we find undercared for lizards. This little guy was in a tank with a bunch of crickets 3 times the size of his head, and they were eating at him!!!! So we did the right thing. We brought him/ her home. Of course this one belongs to my daughter, so I still need one of my own. He is a cutie though. He/she is about 3 weeks from what we can gather. Tigger is the name and he loves attention already.

I think alot of people are going to disagree with you on this one. By buying sick or injured animals you are telling the petstore that it is okay to keep them in those conditions because somebody will still buy them.
Granted the lizard is definitely going to have a better life than it did in the store, but you should try to show the petstore what they are doing wrong and see if they will improve their husbandry. Otherwise you should leave your money in the car so you aren't tempted to save all of the little sick ones. It just cements the idea that poor husbandry is alright.

I don't want you to think i'm being mean, I just want you to understand that supporting a bad petstore probably isnt in the best interest of the reptiles that they keep.

Thanks Lacey,
By no means do I think you are mean!! I totally agree with you. Which is why I typically don't go into pet stores only to get the things I need for my pets. Buying from breeders is by far the best option, unless you find an exceptional petstore. Even my cat was obtained from a breeder. I just felt soooo sorry for this poor little guy. And of course I handled him and examined him prior to purchasing. He had stool in the tank that looked decent. No open wounds, eyes were bright and alert and he was very active. He luckily had only been there for a few days. I told the person at the pet store that the crickets were way oversized for that little guy and told him to check out HC. (I don't think he was too thrilled....go figure)
I appreciate the fact that there are people here that care enough to speak the truth regardless. Thanks again!!

Yeah i've recommended HC to petstores before, but I don't think they listen. I know a popular skink site that has printed up business cards, and they'll send them to members to pass out. They've actually had a few people post and say, "I feel guilty because I know we aren't doing enough, what can I do to help?"
Rich, maybe you should consider something like that...just a suggestion. I know I would be passing them out all over town, I run into so many people who say,"Well, I throw him a handful of crickets each week and I bought him a heatrock, so why is he not moving or growing?" I resist the urge to choke them and I usually resist the urge to yell at them....and if they have the internet I tell them to come on to HC.

Congrats on the new addition Angel's daughter!! I use the same excuse - this one is not a pet, it's a rescue, and this one is not mine, it's my daughters - now, 8 lizards later I am looking for new excuses (anyone got any I could borrow lolol)

It is good that you care enough to take him and give him a good home and I do agree with Lacey that maybe that's not always the best thing to do as it reinforces the pet shops thought of selling sick animals to softies like us!! Great that he is with you now though - at least he will get the care he deserves.

Shame on you Emma! I gave up being creative. No one believes it anyways so now I just say that I have too much in my paypal account sitting dormant.

My excuse is, "it's just a rescue, and I promise it will only be here until it is stronger and I can place it in a permanent home."
As long as you place the occasional lizard into a new home (to prove you aren't hording them to yourself) no one suspects anything...although my sister asked why I have such a hard time placing the nice lizards when the lizards that dont care for me always find new caring homes real quick...hehehe. I think shes on to me, but since shes getting into the hobby I think she'll be more on my side than anything.
