Beardy poop

ok,
I cannot believe that I want to learn about this. I have 2 human babies and I up to my elbows in that!
A couple of question about beardy poop. Please tell me what you know.
--what's a healthy color and consistancy?
--i'm new at this, but the poop that I've seen here is huge in relation to the size of my boy! normal?
--i read somewhere that poop that is encased in a membrane could be parasite infested? Is that right?
--won't his poop change in looks as his food changes. ie: right now I'm having to force feed baby food, so his poop is different than after he eats crickets right.
--how would a dragon that has never had any outside contact get parasites? maybe from petstore crickets?
--I need a good source to find out about symptoms/treatment of parasites.
--I can't see a herp dr. til next month. Are there any OTC treatments?

Thanks,
Dianne

Colors would be two, dark brown/black (unless feeding silk worms) and then the urates would be white/yellowish...

Theres not really a size minimum or maximum, it would depend on appetite and size of dragon.

Not sure here, maybe someone else can help here...

Yes this is true for some foods, though usually just a temporary change...

Yep, your right there, coccidia has been linked to crummy kept live crickets. Where do you get yours?

You could take a look at our articles section for parasite info or check out our Bearded Dragon care sheet... http://www.herpcenter.com/showthread.php?t=6971

The poop will change from the feeding of baby food vs crickets. Your Bearded Dragon can get parasites from crickets or from the prior enviroment he was in if the cages were dirty and if he was fed crickets inside his enclosure. As far as literature you can view our selection of books recommended...here http://www.herpcenter.com/available_literature.php
and look into this book Understanding Reptile Parasites
by Roger Klingenberg

Hi Dianne!

Apart from what has already been say I would add that it should always be somewhere in between dry and watery. Dry and runny are signs of problems.
Keep in mind that a Bearded Dragon with a high water ingestion, like fed on pellets for example, will poop something more watery which is normal.
Urates should be a bit more solid than the rest but not hard, which is again a sign of problems.

Yes, it's normal but remember that is not normal to "store" poo, I mean, they should poop regularly on their own. According to "my" vet, not pooping regularly every couple of days is a sign of problems like incorrect/imcomplete feeding. If by the fifth day mine doesn't go, I give him a bath so that he can do it in the tub.

If you read that here, it was probably me that posted that 3 weeks ago.
According to my vet, a mucous membrane is a sign of parasites.

Yes it will. That's why is important to feed him a variety of veggies and inverts per feeding and not per time period (like a week of crickets, a week mealworms, etc for example). With a regular diet you will notice any change immediately.

You didn't explain why do you think your Bearded Dragon might have internal parasites and why are you force feeding him. It might not be parasite related.
