Hi and welcome to Herpcenter. Some salmonella bacteria have been found in normal gastrointesetinal inhabitants in many reptiles. But you can also get it from food kept at improper temps, raw chicken and preparation. The best way to avoid that is to wash your hands after handling reptiles of any kind and keeping enclosures clean. Use bleach and water solution mix to disinfect cage furniture, bowls and cage and make sure you rinse thoroughly.

Hi Dweidran!

Welcome to Herp Center! We have had reptiles in our house for about 15 years now and none of us have ever come down with salmonella. Like Marsha said you should ALWAYS wash your hands after handling any animal, and using proper cleaning methods and there should never be a problem.

Post some pics if and when you get some Bearded Dragons!

Steve

Welcome to the Herp Center Network!
As Marsh said simple hygene practices will reduce or eliminate your chances of contracting salmonella. You can get it from lizards but I have not heard of a case being specifically linked to bearded dragons. You can also get it from raw chicken. The bacteria is passed in feces from the carrrier animal and then must find entrance to your body by being injested or exposure to mucous membranes such as your eyes or inside your nostrils. It is more or less a food poisoning type illness and in healthy humans is nothing more than the mother of all stomache aches complete with diarreah and/or vomiting. Trust me, you DON"T want it!
The real danger is to infants (including pregnant women), the elderly, or anyone that suffers from an immune deficiency such as HIV or people undergoing chemotherapy.
