Need Help!!!!!

OMG! today I get home from school and I find my baby german dragon dragon his 2 back legs. i was soo scared. Then he has like a seisure and starts trembling and on his back he had like a bump. i got soo scared I thought he was gonna blow up. he stopped shakeing and I picked him up , he looked like it comfort him. so I started moving his legs around carefully making sure its no causing him any pain. he seem to not really mind . so I put him back in his tank and he starts using his back legs a little more, not the right one though then he was recovering then BAM! he gets another seisure same thing happens. He's gotten better and he stopped having seisures. If theres anyone that knows anything about wat im talking about please let me know. I talked to a breeder and he told me the reason its doing that is because he ate too much or he ate a cricket 2 big. He is 11 days old and he is around 5 1/2 inches long... Help please!!!

I've never heard of overeating causing seizures. I would recommend a trip to the vet

First of all, there is no such thing as eating too much.

Second of all, it's impaction.

Impaction is caused for 2 reasons...

1. Particle Substrates (sand, bark, etc..)
2. Ingesting an insect bigger than the space between the Bearded Dragon's eyes.

What type of substrate do you have? And have you measured the space between your Bearded Dragon's eyes? If so, are you feeing the same sized crickets?

Impaction is VERY SERIOUS. I strongly suggest rushing your BD to the vet RIGHT AWAY!! They may need to do an operation to remove the blockage in his/her intestine.

A bump in the spine comes with serious impaction... which is fatal if not looked after. So I URGE you to get to a vet or an emergency clinic A.S.A.P!

If you have any sandy or particle substrate of any kind, GET RID OF IT!!! Start using Paper Towels... and invest in Duck Brand Non-Adhesive Shelf Liner. It is the BEST substrate!

Also, start measuring the insects that you feed to your Bearded Dragon. Make sure you measure the space between your Bearded Dragon's eyes. Measure from eye to eye.

How old is your Bearded Dragon??
What have you been feeding it??

Good luck and please keep us posted!! Get to a vet!!!!

I agree, its doubtful that overeating was the cause. It could be you are feeding too large a cricket or there could be an impaction problem that would account for the paralyzed legs. The seizures could also be a symptom of Metabolic Bone Disease. What is your substrate and what do you have in the way of lighting?
If the probelm continues a vet trip is order.

What xzcarloszx is describing sounds like hind leg paralyses. This comes from a serious impaction. When a Dragon is this seriously impacted, they will go into seizures. It is very common to "shake" when a dragon is impacted and paralyzed. The bump in the spine is also due to the impaction. Whatever is impacting the Dragon is quite big... too big for the intestine so nothing can get through, this is putting pressure on the intestine which is putting pressure on the Dragon's spine... Thus, the bump. This is an extremely serious situation. It is extremely fatal. The Dragon is feeling a LOT of pain.

xzcarloszx, get your Dragon to a vet right away. Don't waste your time talking on forums! The vet is more important!

Again, good luck and please keep us posted!!

thank you guys

thank you guys its definitely impaction and I feel really bad for him because I can feel the ball on his lower stomach its too big for him to digest it. Tomm I will take him to the vet first thing. i dont want to looser goliathe he is a very nice yellow german baby. The substrate im using is Second Nature Dog Litter by Ralston Purina. Its like a bunch of stixs meant for dogs but when the dragons poop and pie it absorbs it and doesnt cause any odor. Its pretty big I dont think my dragon ate it on purpose I think it was while he was hunting for crickets. i started using this because a breeder friend of mines uses it and tells me its great.heat I have a 10inch ceramic doom with a 100 wat bulb the temp is at 114. i dont think its problems with the heat. i tried putting him in warm water cuz they say it helps them poop. all of them pooped but him. Thank you guys youve all been extremely helpfull

xzcarloszx, it's kind of like repti carpet.. but a million times better! NOTHING soaks into it, never! And it's machine washable!

When your dragon poops on it, simply wipe it up with paper towels and/or unscented baby wipes! It cleans up SO easily. You should wash it in the washing machine once a month or every other week.

It looks a lot nicer too.

You can typically buy it at Walmart and Lowes. Or you can order from the Duck Brand site... I think.

xzcarloszx, how is the Bearded Dragon doing now? Have you visited a vet yet?

I wanted to ask, since I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet.. you said your dragon is just 11 days old?? Did you breed him/her yourself?, because if not, and you bought him, the breeder was very irresponsible to have sold a dragon so young. We keep our babies back at least 4 weeks, to make sure that they are eating well, growing and healthy,.

Also, what are you feeding him? He should only be on small crickets, and the substrate you are using is not one that I would recommend - any particle substrate can cause impaction, and especially for babies, is just too risky to use. Best to keep him on paper towels or carpet for now, and when he is an adult you can choose to move him back to particle substrate if you wish, but not the dog litter you have been using. We choose to use sand with our healthy adult dragons, but even this runs the risk of causing impaction, and we use it at our own risk. The liner that Enigma is talking about sounds great!

Anyway, good luck and please keep us updated.
