Hind Leg Extension

Hi,
My 18month old bearded dragon seems to have partial paralysis & hind leg extension.
I feed her medium crickets, mealworms & woodies that come with various sizes in the same container.
I dust her food with calcium & vitamins & she has Uv lighting.
She has been a bit awkward on her feet for a few months but it seems to be worse since she came out of hibernation.
Can I do anything to help her?

thanks
Katrina

Re: Hind Leg Extension

Sounds like she could be impacted. Has she poo'd lately? If not, try soaking her in warm water and gently rubbing her belly from sternum to vent. Do you have a UVB light on her?

Re: Hind Leg Extension

Yes, what type of lighting do you exactly have? Type of bulb, brand, UV or UVB output, age? How often are you dusting her food?

What kind of feeder is a "woodie"?

Is the dragon pooping regularly?

Re: Hind Leg Extension

Hi, Sorry I haven't replied to these I'm new & didn't know how to find them.
I have UVB light on her. There is poo in her enclosure but there are 2 dragons in there.
I dust her food every 2nd or 3rd day.
Woodies are a type of cockoach.
I use a Sylvania reptistar 15WUVA/ UVB tube light. I change it every 6 months.
I will try the warm water.

thanks

Re: Hind Leg Extension

How big are the feeders that yo are using. Hind leg extension/paralysis, is often attributed to impaction due to feeding insects that are too large. You should feed prey about as long as the width between the dragons eyes.

Re: Hind Leg Extension

I have been trying to get more information & now I think she might have Metabolic bone disease which doesn't sound very good! I'm not sure why as I have the correct lighting & it is only 5mths old & I give her calcium & vitamin supplements.
I feel awful for her as I don't think it can be fixed.

Re: Hind Leg Extension

Early stages of Metabolic Bone Disease CAN be reversed! But it may take a trip to the vet. Tell us the run down on your housing, temps, what type of lamp are you using , distance to lizard etc.

Re: Hind Leg Extension

Hi,
Warm end 27o, cool end 19o
I use Sylvania Reptistar 15w 6500 Kelvin full spectrum UVA/ UVB tube that is 5months old
It is 50cm from UV to floor of enclosure. 36cm from UV to log that goes under UV.
I dust food 2 - 3 x week with Calcium - phosphorus free, vit D supplement and a multi vitamin mineral, amino acid supplement

thanks
Katrina

You have two very important problems to address!

Thats way too cold! Your Bearded Dragon can't digest! You should have an ambient temperature of 32-35 and a basking spot of 40.5!

I am not familiar with that particular lamp. Matter of fact I have never heard of it! The standard for flourescent tubes is the Zoomed 5.0.

With a flourescent tube you need the animal to be able to be closer to the tube. 20cm is more like it. Anything over 30cm and the UVB drops off to unusable levels.
