Help- Broken Jaw

Hello,
so one of my female Bearded Dragons has a broken jaw, I took her to the vet, he did an x-ray so we know it is broken. The vet then wraped her head in tape and sent us home. Once we got home and I put my Bearded Dragon back in her tank she would not stop rubbing her face on EVERYTHING to try and get the tape off. Also, her jaw started hanging open again like it was before the vet taped her, so I took off the tape figuring she was just going to hurt herself even worse by rubbing her head on everything. Since then, I have made a smaller brace for her head out of vet wrap (it is a flexible bandage tape that sticks to itself) that I have been putting on her at night and it holds her jaw together. It has been a few days and her jaw is just not healing. The side that is broken has dropped below her normal jaw-line, and her teeth are now crooked and cutting into her upper lip. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to heal a broken jaw, or know how long it could take to heal? I have an appointment for her to to back to the vet on Thurs, but I feel like the vet just made her jaw worse when he taped it, and although he comes recommended from the reptile store I go to I just don't trust him anymore. Any suggestions?

Re: Help- Broken Jaw

You need to go back to the vet. There is nothing we can post here that can help you. The jaw needs to be realigned and secured somehow to allow for proper healing.

Re: Help- Broken Jaw

Also try and find out how she broke it. Hopefully it wasn't a calcium deficiency.

And make sure that it is a REPTILE vet that you are going to, not just your ordinary cat and dog vet.

I agree, back to the vet! With the constant taping, and coming off, and retaping, the jaw cannot mend. And if it did, it would most likely be misaligned, preventing the dragon from feeding itself.
And once the jaw is reset, strip the tank down to bare essentials. If there is nothing to rub it on the brace may last longer.

Re: Help- Broken Jaw

I would be trying a new vet. Something more has to be done, than wrapping it in tape!

Here are some resources to help you find one.

Re: Help- Broken Jaw

So I found a new vet in my area, and she was great. She spent hours working on Chalula, re-set her jaw, and actually had to sew the bone back together because her bone is to small to pin. So Chalula is still recovering, the vet is not sure the bone will remain re-set and heal, but so far she looks good. So we are hoping for the best.
