New Beardie Not Eating?

Hello,
well I got a new Bearded Dragon for my female lizzy, and it turns out she’s not gravid just pretending(getting fat lol) .Well the new Bearded Dragon is a male he’s the same size as lizzy, he’s looks healthy as an ox and his colors are bright he has a gut, sure signs of him eating great. Well I got him Monday and he has been less interested in eating and more interested in mating. He and lizzy are in different tanks at different ends of the house. He accidently saw her the first day I brought him home. I was holding her and walked past his tank apparently lizzy thought she should jump next to his cage and immediately started bobbing her head I picked her up as I was laughing and put her away. Since then he won’t eat he just keeps humping and covering the cage. Gross. Anyways any suggestions, He’s supposed to be in quarantine for 3 more days. Will he be ok without food?

Re: New Beardie Not Eating?

I'm not a Bearded Dragon expert, but the same goes for any reptiles that gets a lot of their water content from food. As long as he's drinking he'll be ok if not there is a danger of dehydration.

As Mike said, being without food, dehydration is a concern.
Try letting him soak in the bathtub and see if he drinks.

Re: New Beardie Not Eating?

Thanks, for the suggestion, I usually soak my lizards twice a week for 10 minutes. Is this enough for the male thats not eating or should I soak him 3 times this week. I thought about trying some crickets to stimulate him. I rather not have to make the Bearded Dragon protein smoothie. which its a mixture of veggies and meal worms or super worms.

Sincerely,
Ashley chandler

Re: New Beardie Not Eating?

You also just put him into an new enviroment so give him time to adjust. He also doesnt need to see the female. They can sense each other.

Re: New Beardie Not Eating?

I've had a picky dragon so I'm learning lots of tricks to getting one interested in food.

Try getting him interested in something that moves. I've had to start spoon-feeding my guy his shredded carrots because he won't eat them otherwise. I use a soft baby spoon so he won't hurt his mouth, and I wiggle it around until he pays attention and takes a bite. Same goes for his greens- get them moving (wiggle them by hand, usually) and he's immediately interested. It doesn't matter what is distracting him at the time, it's always worked for me.

Hopefully moving targets will get his attention long enough for him to eat! But at least he's staying hydrated. Good luck!

Ya, I do give him protein, he has super worms in there. I've been taking them in and out because I don't want them to bite him.

Re: New Beardie Not Eating?

He started eating just yesterday apparently the lady that we bought him from hand fed him. My husband decided to try a couple of things to see if he'll eat and we picked up the worm and held KA (our new Bearded Dragon) and boom he ate. After that as long as we are holding him he'll eat, but I lack time to do it everyday so we are trying to get him to eat without being held.
