Bearded Dragon Eyesight

I had a bearded dragon a couple of years ago and now I have my second and third. Their not full grown yet, but I've noticed something odd about the male. When I feed crickets, they both eat fine and catch them, though alot of the time, it takes two or three tries.

When I feed them mealworms, the male just can't seem to get them. I keep the mealworms in the fridge to slow their growth, so when I feed them the worms they are real slow and don't move at all. But when he goes for one, he always aims for about half an inch of it. It will take him up to 10-15 tries to get it. He also has this problem with his vegetables too. The female has no problem eating anything immobile. Could there be something wrong with his eyes? I've taken them both to the vet before the problem developed, and she said he was healthy.

Sometimes they just miss judge... I would think that as long as he is eating and you don't notice any other issues going on you should be ok waiting to see what happens. Bring it up to the vet next time you take them in for a checkup...

Thats normal. Mine do the same thing. Bearded Dragons really cant see directly infront of them at a close level. Look at how their eyes are set. They see better to the side. Mine can get food anywhere to the side but always miss judge whats in front.

Re: Bearded Dragon Eyesight

My Bearded Dragons do the same thing occasionally-I love to watch them eat, they get a funny look on their face when they realize they missed it. Maybe that's why they both stand in the feeding dish among the food...lol. I use a rectangular feeding dish, and they don't seem to have as much trouble with it as compared to a round one--- I believe as Venus stated, it's simply a matter of eye location.
