constipated beardie
Hi all
its been a long time. My sister has two Bearded Dragons and one of them seem to be constipated.. What can we do?? the Bearded Dragon is about 5 months old and about the average size of Bearded Dragons that age. seems very healthy and has a great appetite. I have suggested placing the Bearded Dragon in water but it did not work.. any advice would be appreciated. |

Re: constipated beardie
Did you put it in warm water and let it sit in there a bit. Also rubbing the stomach from the sternum to the vent will help breakup some of the blockage. If that doesnt work you might need vet intervention unless you get some other suggestions.

What Marsha said. Let it soak for at least half an hour or until it goes.
What substrate is she using? And what's she feeding it? |

Re: constipated beardie
Okay, this is an old remedy my mother told me about that I've never tried, and I don't know if it actually works for reptiles or just warm blooded animals, or if it's particularly safe, so please take this with discretion.
Apparently swallowing a little vaseline will sometimes help clear up a blockage in the digestive system. I've been told it really works, but like I said, I've never tried it. I just thought I'd throw out the suggestion and see if anyone else has heard about this.

Re: constipated beardie
I would never suggest ingesting vasoline or giving it to anything!!
Its petroleum!

Re: constipated beardie
I agree with Merlin. Vaseline could be, and most assurdly is, toxic.

Re: constipated beardie
Vasoline is regularly used as an 'at home' treatment in cats to help with hairballs, but i've never heard of it for reptiles, but Zola (my Bearded Dragon) has a chronic impaction and gets a spoonful of vegetable oil every couple of weeks and he usually goes the next day without soaking or massage.
First off you need to get to the bottom of WHY the Bearded Dragon is impacted, can you tell us about the enclosure and diet?

Re: constipated beardie
I'm a new owner and my 10 month old Bearded Dragon is chronically constipated. I brought some of his fecal matter to the vet and found that it was the substrate. We were using the calcium sand stuff that says it fully digestible. Per the vet, if you use this substrate then feed your Bearded Dragon his insects out of the cage. Otherwise he consumes to much of it.
Thank you moshpitrockchick for the veg. oil suggestion. |
