True, and in the best case scenario the tip will break and fall off on its own. However if dry gangrene has set in the infection will continue up the tail and enter the body killing the lizard.
I suggest you take a permanent marker such as a sharpie pen and draw a ring around the current top of the damage. If the damage moves past that point you will need to have that section of the tail amputated and the animal put on antibiotics. If at this stage the vet still tells you that there is nothing to worry about get another vet!
