weird lil dragon... |
| This is what our member has to say: she climbs her plant all the way to the top...and opens her mouth. I've read that this is called gaping and that they do it ... |

weird lil dragon...
she climbs her plant all the way to the top...and opens her mouth. I've read that this is called gaping and that they do it to cool off... but why not just climb down from the plant or go lower on it?
Should I move her?

Actually they gape for a variety of reasons. I would just leave her be. If she gets too hot she will move on her own. They are a much better judge of what temperature they need to be than we are.

They will gape as a threat display. They will also gape as you suspected to cool down. I have seen mine sitting happily under the basking light gaping. As soon as I come up the gaping stops but she doesn't move from the spot. I have also seen them gape if they are stressed out.
The only thing to really be concerned with about gaping is if you notice them with an excess of saliva in their mouths, or a wheezing sound when they breathe.

Speaking of gaping, i was taking my Bearded Dragons to the petshop today because they're going to be staying there all this coming week while im on vacation. My male beardy was kinda jumpy so I held him and he flattened himself out and every time we passed another moving car he flared his beard and gaped his mouth. So ya its possible your doing something to tick off your beardy or its venting like everyone else said. Both of which are normal behaviors so don't worry yourself.

Maia gets like that when I take her out of her tank and put her in her "feeding box"... one of the puppies will come walking by and peer in. And Maia opens her mouth at him! It's adorable.

adorable...i dunno. a threat display is'nt always a good thing to subject your herps too(although they may look cool). always try have your herps under as little stress as possible. just my 2 cents worth...
