beardies eye

I got my 7 inch female Bearded Dragon friday. Saturday she stopped opening her right eye. She only opened it occassionally and when I fed her crickets. I have been putting a couple of drops in that eye 2-3 times a day. After a minute she opens it for a few minutes then closes it. I read that it could be irritated from sand but I use newspaper as my substrate. Do you think it could be irritated from the calcium powder? I didnt see any go in her eye, but it could have happened. What should I do?

Thanks

If you're not sure the first step is to irrigate the eye with clean water. The only thing I could find was a vitamin deficiency, but it said that both eyes and throat become swollen. It could be anything from a stuck piese of shed to something in the eye. If it persists I would reccomend a vet trip. Keep us posted.

Without consulting a vet I wouldn't use them. Just try a little spring or filtered water to start.

What have you been using to put in her eye?

What do you mean by her eye won't open? - are you sure it's because it can't open, or is she just closing it because she wants to? Can you see anything that appears to be stuck in the eye or is there noticable irritation around or in the eye?

If it does appear to be something serious you should definately consult a vet.

Just as the rule is for humans, never use someone or something else's medication on another animal, who the medication wasn't intended for.

Please keep us updated, i hope your dragon is ok.

I have been putting drops of warm, spring water in her eye. She only opens it when I feed her and a few other times. I think the water drops might be helping a little bit. She seems to be opening it a little more. I didnt think the turtle eyedrops would work but I thought I might as well ask. I volunteer at an animal hospital saturday. One of the vets specializes in herps and he said he would take a look at her.

Thanks

That's good - please let us know how she gets on. I'm sure she's fine, but it would be interesting to know what the problem is. Good luck

I took Sandy(my Bearded Dragon) to the vet this morning. The vet is treating her for an eye infection, which I am not sure how she got. He gave me medicine that I squirt in her mouth and some that I squirt in the infected eye. Since I volunteer at my vets hospital, he did it all for free!!!

Wow that's great! I'm glad you found the problem and a solution for it, at least now you know she will be better soon. Great news! And that is wonderful treatment from the vet!

How it was caused.. well this could be a number of things - what substrate is she kept on? I'm just wondering if anything could have got stuck in her eye causing an infection. Or perhaps a cricket bit her and this became infected.. this is quite rare but possible. Another cause could be cross-contamination. Perhaps you touched an animal with some kind of infection and passed it on to your little one??

Whatever happened I am glad you got it sorted! It's such a relief.

I'm glad you're Bearded Dragon is okay. And as for getting help for free, maybe that's a good enough reason to volunteer at shelters and zoos on its own! (Besides the fact that they need help)
