Naming your unsexed dragon: what's the secret? =)
R-Day has become B-Day! My wife feel also in love with this beauty and as soon as we get our aquarium -> terrarium conversion ready and stable, we'll get it from the pet store.
She asked me "how should we name it?" and I realized that is the first of some very intriguing questions =)
So, if it doesn't have a gender (yet), what to call it?
Anglophone countries have a lot of names that have no gender connotation: Adrian, Leslie, James, Robin, etc. I have no such luck of being from one of those countries =)
Then there's sound. Lets take dogs for example. Dogs are very sensitive to open vowels and "ks" sounds. That's why "Max" and "Rex" are so popular names among dogs.
Are Bearded Dragons sensitive to specific sounds? If they are, what sounds are those?
Last but not least, do they care? =)
I mean, does your Bearded Dragon "answers" by its name? Does "Ben" know you are calling him and not "Frank", "Jeff" or "Betty"?
Thanks!
Ricardo

Kevin, doesn't Flapjack come running to Xta when she says his name? Wasn't that in a lizard zen one time?
My Bearded Dragon doesn't know her name, because I dont really say anything to her except, "come here bugger". Oh great, now she is going to respond to bugger. lol

The dragon doesn't rally care what you call it, just don't call it late for dinner.
With unsexed animal I generally go with names that refer to neither sex.
Sparky, Fossie, Zok, Magic, Blaze, etc. Just take something that is descriptive like Smoky, Blackie, Skye, Rayne. Just have fun with it.
If you do a search for "pet names" you will get several lists.

If I cant sex a dragon I give it a name that is easily changable but is the same sounding. ie. I named one Solara thinking it was a girl, she became Solaris..Sequioa, became Sequio..

My Bearded Dragons wouldn't suit any other names, it gives them that identity, mine look at me when i'm talking not just to them but if im doing something, watching t.v, or just on my pc, and I just happen to talk they all turn to look, I think they just respond to noise, and when my bird makes a racket they tilt their heads like a dog would, as if trying to figure out what the noise is.
Although I do not like the names of my adult females, (Smidge and Smudge) I don't think I could change them, they came to me with the names Simon and Smudge, as they where sold as male and female, but I found out both female and changed Simon to Smidge...

my beardy could care less what you say as long as you just talk! When I go to feed it, i'll talk to it, play music, sing withe and it comes up to the glass and turns it's head to the side and licks the glass (lol).

Cody, you are forgetting that human beings are stupid creatures that get confused when something doesn't have a name!
But that's a nice suggestion, waiting for some personality to flourish and then name it accordingly.
Thanks everyone! =)
