UVB?
Hi All -
So my newest family member is cute as a button, but upon closer inspection of the package for the bulb I grabbed (apparently too hastily) it is only UVA. My little guy needs some UVB quick, I'm thinking, but I was wondering what is the best one out there? The local store does NOT carry anything with UVB other than a $50 florescent, which would then require the matching lamp - both of which are bigger than the 50g tank my TURTLES are in!
I'll be to a bigger store this weekend, but would rush order one tonight while I'm ordering better heat pads and whatnot - ebay is such a money eater.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
A
Pictures forthcoming, he is nameless as of yet, but a lot of spunk in the evenings!

Re: UVB?
The best UV light, in my opinion, is the Mega Ray! Its the only light I use and will use.

Re: UVB?
I totally agree with Rich. Mega Ray is all I use.

Re: UVB?
btw, it's for a beardy baby - about 5 weeks old - he just came to us on Monday, and isn't quite chubby or skinny - which means I want the little guy to start eating and get chubby!
I had to take crickets out yesterday (Day 1) as he wasn't too interested. I tried this afternoon and got a little response, but no eating (Day 2)
Tomorrow - is it time for a "slurry" - if so, just send the recipe and that's what he'll get. or give him a little time as he may be still adjusting?
The woman said that they were all pretty active eaters, and that most were getting interested in greens and carrots. He definately looked at the greens (collard and mustard mixed) and carrots too - but hasn't since I put it in.
I'm feeling pretty confident with my other critters, but I guess being new to the beardy world (though I think I've memorized the caresheet! ) and that he is SO itty bitty is making me nervous!
Thanks again -
Anna

Re: UVB?
He is still adjusting. Him not eating while he is acclimating to his new surroundings is completely normal. During the acclimation, you shouldn't be handling him. If you are, you should stop. the only interaction you should have for the first week is daily maintenance and feeding/watering. Watching him is fine, but he is pretty stressed over the move so let him adjust for a few days with minimal interuption.

Re: UVB?
That was quick! Thanks.
Isn't it funny the things we'll do for our babies...that light will cost me twice as much as the donation I made for the little tike!

Re: UVB?
Gotcha on the handling. Though sorely tempted, I remembered that with Lefty, too - leave him alone for a while to get comfy. I've only been in and out for food and water. And to remove unwanted crickets after an hour or so.

Re: UVB?
The light is well worth it. Also, is that calci sand you have him on?

Re: UVB?
That light only costs $39.95. Considering those lights last over a year without needing replacing, that is cheap! lol I was paying around $24-$28 for the flourescent repti-suns and they needed replacing every 6 months to be effective. Not to mention the light I linked you to also emits heat. In many cases, depending on your temps, you can save money on heating the enclosure as well.

Re: UVB?
You make a good point - and really, anything is worth it in the end, if it helps him be healthy and happy.
And no, no calci-sand in my house! There a solid clay structure on a part of the tank It slopes up to the bask that he was on, and under that is a cave. It's clear of crumbs and debri. The rest of the tank is repticarpet, he also has a sandstone bask, itty bitty dishes (plastic bottle tops are the only thing appropriately small!), and, of course, a temp/humidity gauge, that he is so lovingly cuddling with in the picture!
