Re: My new friend Spike

is that a typical screen top for an aquarium? if so the holes are to small to allow the UVB to get to the dragon... he looks good tho! Thanks for the pics

It is a slide on screen that came with the enclosure. So I dont know if it is typical or not.

It is a 40 gallon tank. What size would you recommend? 55? or bigger?

Re: My new friend Spike

yup needs a bigger tank.

The easy way to see about the screen in the top is to measure the size of the screen. They need to be no smaller than 1/4 inch weave. If its smaller, cut out a section and place your light over that. Otherwise the UVB will not be getting to your little guy.

And that sand can cause an impaction. I would stick to tile.

Re: My new friend Spike

He's a cutie. I love dragaons. I agree with the sand especially if it is calcium sand. Shelf line, tile, linoleum, newspaper are better choices.

Re: My new friend Spike

I understand the concern with sand. I know that for at least the last 3 years he has been on this type of sand. It is a petsmart type of sand that is "ingestible" (taken for what it is worth). Will a change in environment cause any undo stress?

Re: My new friend Spike

Not as much as you think, and a little stress is definitely worth his good health.

Unfortunately, pet stores sell several different brands of sand that they say are harmless if swallowed. I'm not sure how that's legal, because it's completely a lie. Any particle substrate, if swallowed, can cause impaction. So most of us will recommend a substrate like paper towels or tile or repti-carpet, which they can't swallow and which is easier to keep clean - thus, much healthier for your dragon.

However, many people opt to keep their dragons on sand, but feed them in a separate tank or area, which greatly reduces the chance of them swallowing sand, because they don't swallow it along with their food. If your dragon is not the type that licks his surroundings and could get sand on his tongue that way, that's a good option too.

Your dragon will probably be upset or nervous for a little bit after you change everything around, but he'll get over it pretty quickly.
