Please help me with temps and UV
OK, I am about to become mommy to a 9-month old Bearded Dragon, and I have his tank all set up except for the UV lighting. The current owner has a fluoresent fixture that she's willing to sell me, so that will get us started, but from all I have heard, I'm pretty convinced that I want to invest in something from ReptileUV.com. The problem is that I can't make heads or tails of the site and I don't know what to order.
FYI, the enclosure is a 50-gallon glass tank with dual screen lids in wooden frames. So it's 36" long, 18" deep and 18" tall. So far, I've got a 100-watt basking lamp on one end, resting right on the screen. It has raised the basking temp at the top of the climbing log up to about 96 F, which I know is not warm enough. I have added a Under Tank Heater to that side to see if that boosts things a bit. The cooler end is at 75 F during the day, with a night bulb in a small fixture on top of the scrren on that end. At night, the ambient temp at that end remained at 75, while the other end went down to 70.
I say all this about temps for two reasons: (1) I don't really have any other spots on the screen for putting lamps; and (2) I know I need to get the temps up, so I was figuring that one of the combo heat/UV products they sell might be good. (We'll see how much more heat I need after the Under Tank Heater heats up -- it and the basking lamp are both on a timer, so they go off at night).
Sooo... Which of the Reptile UV products do you think would be good for my setup? If I get the temps right with the setup I have, then perhaps one of the new fluorescent fixtures that they say they have available? Or maybe I should replace the basking lamp with one of the self-ballasted lamps (the 160 or the 120)? If so, which one? Or...... Aaaah! Help!
