Silkworms
Within the last several weeks my 1 year old bearded dragon has seriously cut way back on his cricket intake. I know they are suppose to when they get older but he will only eat about 15 or so crickets a week. My major concern is that he is not getting enough calcium. I know there is calcium in his veggies but I don't know if this is enough. Even at that he does not consume his veggies like he probably should. He will investigate them if I place some wax worms or superworms in there but usually that is the only time he will go to his dish.
Becuase he will eat wax worms and superworms I was thinking about getting him some silkworms. I was planning on giving him one everyday since one silkworm equals around 3-5 crickets. Is this correct? If you folks can help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have heard outstanding things about the T-Rex UV heat lamps. I understand that they increase appetite and bring out colors and all that good stuff. Anyone here have one of these or is this just advertisement hype? Anyway if you all can help me I would be greatly appreciated. ![]() |

Hi!
Yes, when Bearded Dragons get older, they will eventually reach a stage where they eat 20% inverts and 80% veggies but that's not so soon, at that age. A few people here have been having trouble making their Bearded Dragons eat, some due to spring and other due to puberty. What is your Bearded Dragon currently eating?

Need to make sure the UV is UVB. Here is a link for the product I use. Its a basking light and UVB combo.

Ever since I got him I have been feeding him parsely, turnip greens, collard greens, mustard greens, enidve, kale, and bok choy. I have also been feeding him butternut squash and rasberries and strawberries as treats. Insect wise he was eating me out of house and home until a few months ago. When he reached about 10 months of age I began feeding him once a day instead of twice a day. The last month or so I have been feeding him (cricket wise) every other day.
Somedays he will eat his veggies and other days he will not. He will eat superworms and wax worms without a problem. That is why I am going to get silkworms since they make a very good staple. I understand that one silkworm equals 3-5 crickets. I will give him two every other day. If he eats these I will feel a little better about his diet. I am just very concerned about him getting deficient in his calcium and vitamins. |

Yes I have dusted his veggies with Rep Cal calcium with vitamin D3 (phosphorous free). Still he will only occasionally eat some veggies. A perfect example was just a few minutes ago. He was basking on his log and then decided to go to the cool end of his cage. While doing so he crossed his veggie dish that contained some strawberries and dandelion greens. He paused and ate two pieces of strawberries and continued on his way.
He used to eat his veggies really good. Now I will put some wax worms, supers, and his newly aquired silkworms in his veggie dish. This has seemed to help out a little bit. He just cannot help but eat a few greens when his main objective is to eat a worm. ![]() |
