Waxworms - how many are too many?
Hi!
I just got my first overseas live food order delivered and one of the items I bought was a box of 50 waxworms, almost impossible to find here. I know they are very fat and should only be offered as treat so my question is, how many are too many? Can I feed him these 50 waxworms, 2 or 3 a day until they run out or should I give 2 or 3 a week only? Let me just add that Pog's diet has very little fat. He only gets a small box of meallies (around 20g) every 2 or 3 months. Thanks! =) Ricardo

In the fridge? Another thing to upset the mrs =)
I read somewhere that it was better to keep them off the fridge... let me see if I can find that page again...

Hello,
You heard correct RBL. Waxworms are best kept at room temperature or slightly below. Believe it or not, but more will die in the fridge than those kept slightly below room temperature. *Basically a closet where it is cooler since there is no heating in there.) If you see any black waxies in the container, remove them. The dead ones can affect the live ones. If you take them out, you will be increasing the lifespan of the rest of the colony. |

Well.. I guess I can start a breeding colony (another thing to upset the mrs) from whatever waxies that made to pupae.

Hello,
Can you get your hands on some real honeycomb minus the bees? If you can, you could produce a colony. Most of the "make your own food" for them is very slow in the process of delivering babies and you will lose MANY waxies during the process. Waxies are the lavae of the greater wax moth. When in their moth form, they will breed and then die. They don't eat food as moths either. They are most active (as moths) during the evening hours. |

Rich, so is not as simple as described by Tricia?
But anyway, I think I can get that. I don't need many waxworms. Just one or two per month for each little herp mouth around here (4). Instead of buying another 50 box (it's the smallest one) and waste money, I could breed them to feed every now and then as a treat.

Bob type in gargoyle gecko to your search engine and it will come up with a lot of examples.
