Spike's treat

As many of you know, I've been Bearded Dragon-sitting for my brother since his house burned down in November.

Well, since I've had them, we've added lots of new items to their diets: various squash, additional greens, and a variety of insects. In fact, I'm going to attempt to reproduce superworms (thanks to Rich's article) for them.

Well, last weekend I decided to buy a pinkie for Spike to try (his first). The pinkie was actually nursing when I picked him out... funny that I never thought of mice nursing their young.

When I got the pinkie home, I put him in Spike's enclosure... and he just looked at it as if to say, "what's this?" Spike really didn't seem too interested, so I rolled the pinkie onto its back so it would get Spike's attention by moving around... no luck. Finally I realized that Spike is a very tidy Bearded Dragon, and prefers to eat out of his plate. LOL. So I put the pinkie in Spike's dish; it didn't take Spike long to realize what was intended! He was a bit confused once he started eating it... it definitely didn't feel like a superworm or cricket! The funny part was him licking his lips when he was done!

I know pinkies are "occasional" items... so once a month or less?

No pictures!? Shame on you!

I've fed them before, Zola LOVES them. Matter of fact, it's about time I treated him to another. They say not to give them more often than once a month, and I agree with that. I only give him one about once every 3 months. He knows what they are right away and munches them down really quick. (some times I feel bad because you can hear them scream)

Good on you for making Spike's diet more varied - variety is always the key to good health.

Although, couldn't you use a f/t pink? If they like them they will just as happily take f/t as live.

I'm not really one for just feeding x-number per month and so on, I feed stuff as I have it personally, so if we have pinkies in then I will offer them once a week, and then sometimes they don't have them for months. However, most of our Bearded Dragons won't take pinks - the three older ones have never accepted a pink, and one of our younger ones used to eat them like they were going out of fashion when she was a juv but now won't touch them! Fussy things The only lizards that will eat pinks now are a couple of the Leopard Geckos.

Pinks are quite fatty and I would say don't feed more than one per week but they are not necessary to the diet of a Bearded Dragon so you don't have to feed them ritualistically each month. They are especially good for post-gravid females as they contain a lot of fat and calcium.

Looks like Rachel summed it up . I dont have anyone close that has live pinkies so I have to settle for f/t. I just thaw it out then use tongs to dangle it in front of the Bearded Dragon and they usually except with no problems, if real picky, I have to drag and wiggle to make it look alive.

Sounds like Spike is having a good time at your house, you might not want to give hime up ...in that case, we will need to get you, your very own Bearded Dragon

How often is one of those things that falls under personal preference. I give our Bearded Dragons each a pinkie once a week. No problem finding then as I just go out back to the rodent barn. I don't know Marsha if Ducky was one of your "drag it by me" Bearded Dragons or not but as a dusted pinkie is descending his head is rising and mouth opening. Mars will have to wait a few months to start getting his.

Mine also get the occasional pink without any particular schedule.
No doing the "mousie dance" needed! Just toss it in and its GONE!

I'll have to ask about F/T next time I go into the pet shop. When I asked for a pinkie, the gal went straight to the live bins. I didn't even think about F/T.

I have a feeling that I'll have to do a mouse dance for Spike... if the worms stand still he won't go after them (shhh... don't tell the worms!)

I had no idea that you weren't supposed to feed pinkies so often. I want to get a Bearded Dragon for my daughter and was under the impression that pinkies were a staple in thier diet (like every other day kinda thing). Honestly, I am relieved that it is only once per month or so...
I LOVE this website. I learn something new everytime I am on here (Thank God for my herp's sake)

I just thought of a question....as we prepare for our purchase of a Bearded Dragon...I have seen in the pet stores remote control vibrating food dishes. The box explains how this device makes it so much easier to feed your herp...no live worms needed. Just place the "canned worms" in the bowl and the vibrating effect draws the Bearded Dragon's attention to the food.
Any thought on this??

They are a waste of money. I've never met a person who can get anything to feed out of them, they vibrate and buzz and scare the living daylights out of the lizards.....plus i've heard icky things about the canned bugs too, like weird smells, juices, and textures....
