Eating Habits

My Bearded Dragon doesn't seem to eat much. She's nearly juvenile and when I put crickets in for her she just looks at them and walks away. Sometimes she will eat three or four and then loses interest. I've put salad in for her and she doesn't seem to touch that either. What can I do?

re: Eating Habits

What are her temps? Cool side and basking spot?
UVB? what kind?
cage size?
what type of veggies are you feeding?
how long have you had the Bearded Dragon?

At this age a Juvy should be getting all the crickets he or she can eat in 15 minutes. Remember to remove any crickets he did not eat they can bite your dragon and stress him out.

re: Eating Habits

As pointed out in your other thread, the temps need to come up.
If it isn't warm enough they can't digest their food.

re: Eating Habits

just reliazed you created the other thread. Get those temps up, waterfall out and if she is still not eating after that it could be becaues of the stress of being moved into a new cage.

re: Eating Habits

What they said. Stress and temps always play a large factor in their appetite.

Re: Eating Habits

Thanks, Temps as follows:
cool end 77
basking 86
humidity 45%

Have removed waterfall and will update on humidty. UV light is Repti Glo 10.0 UVB and runs the length of the viv, basking light is Exo Terra 160watt sun-glo. Dimensions of viv are 2'deep x 2'tall x 4'long. I've had Bearded Dragon a week today she seems calm in her self and her belly and beard have remained a pail cream colour. She can climb up to within 6" of the basking light.

Re: Eating Habits

That basking is way too low. Is that with the thermometer probe right underneath?

Re: Eating Habits

Let me assist you so you can SEE exactly what we are trying to tell you over and over again.

Temperatures

Provision of a temperature gradient inside the tank is essential because bearded dragons, like other reptiles, are unable to physiologically maintain their body temperature. An ambient temperature of 90-95 Fahrenheit should be provided, with a basking spot of 100-110 Fahrenheit, and a daytime low of 75-85 Fahrenheit at a cooler end of the enclosure. Dragons can have a night time temperature of no lower than 70 Fahrenheit. Heat sources can include under-tank heating pads, basking lights and ceramic-heating elements, all of which should be attached to a thermostat to ensure accurate temperature control. Hot rocks, however, should never be used as a heat source, as they can overheat and cause serious burns, or even electrical shocks, to the animals. Lighting used as heat sources and ceramic-heating elements should be away from reach of the dragon's touch to avoid burns.

Re: Eating Habits

Sorry for being a bit slow! I have now put an ifra red heat glo lamp with the sun glo lamp over the basking spot. The basking temp is now 105 the thermometer probe is approx 6" from the floor. The cool end is up to 80, again approx 6" from floor. The waterfall has been removed and humidity is down too. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Eating Habits

thank you for making all the changes. when measuring the basking spot make sure you are measuring the actual basking surface and not the air around it. If she still does not start eating it may be stress related so leave her be and a she adjust she will start acting better.
