Anoles?

I have a friend that every once in a long while will feed his bearded dragon an anole lizard. From what I hear they are good in calcium, and they have the vitamins needed for the dragon. But the real problem in this, Is it wrong?

Re: Anoles?

Do bearded dragons eat anoles or small lizards in the wild? If they do (which I don't know if they do, but someone will), then no, its not wrong.

There are many snakes out there who won't eat fuzzies or pinkies, like garter snakes, they eat bugs and worms and small lizards. It's a circle of life.

Re: Anoles?

Are these wild caught or pet store bought anoles? I ask because of the risk of parasites.

Re: Anoles?

Personally, I don't see a problem with it. My boyfriend and I feed store-bought anoles to his monitor all the time. Anoles are good for bearded dragons. They're usually fed gut-loaded crickets, and they have bones which are high in calcium. As long as YOU don't have a problem with it, who is anyone to judge?

Re: Anoles?

Thanks people. I don't really have a problem with it, but when my friend posted a video of his eating an anole, People freaked out. But yeah, I'll try to feed him one, who knows if he will even eat it.

Re: Anoles?

I would steer clear of it.
If the anole has any parasites,.. so will the dragon that eats it.

Re: Anoles?

While I'm sure they have a lot of calcium... the risk of parasites is huge. Also you might come across the problem with bones- if some dragons have experienced blockage just from chitin shells, the idea of all those little bones would have me worried.

Re: Anoles?

I personally wouldn't do it, but I know of people who have. They do eat smaller lizards in nature, but I think of it as they are also put in conditions in the wild that I wouldn't re-create in captivity. It's all up to you though; everyone thinks differently. The only negative effect that I know of is the stress it puts on the digestive system so if you do choose to feed them I would do it sparingly.
