Cricket Housing Question

I have had my bearded dragon for about a month and have just been getting crickets every other day because my fiance is clean freak and is disgusted by them and the smell they leave behind. What is the cleanest and most effecient way of housing these naturally stinky little critters?

Thanks!

Re: Cricket Housing Question

Outside?
But seriously it depends on how many you are housing at a time. I used to order online 1000 at a time. I used a big rubbermaid tub with ventilation holes cut in it that were covered with metal screen. After a couple of days they would start to stink so I would just clean out the tub.
I am not sure that there is any way around that.

Re: Cricket Housing Question

How old is your Bearded Dragon? If you dont want to feed crickets you can always feed silk worms. They dont stink, they are much healthier and you dont have to feed as many as you would crickets. Although they are a little more expensive but your Bearded Dragon should not go without protein unless it is an adult. Adults you can feed less protein and lots more veggies.

Re: Cricket Housing Question

This works quite well for me. My container houses around 1000-2000 at a time. Usually it's about a month before you can smell them. What you need to do is get rid of the moisture build-up. Moisture means death for crickets. I use a rubbermaid container as Merlin described. Vent in the side and I leave the top off. I have a clip on lamp with a bulb strong enough to give heat off so that it dries out the air. Nothing else is special about it. Simply egg cartons in the bottom. The lamp also benefits me in that it provides xtra heat for them to grow. I buy them at 2/3 size and raising them to adult only takes a few weeks. That way I know they are the healthiest they can be.

Re: Cricket Housing Question

I use the heat method too. I have a rubbermaid tub with vents on the side covered with screen and on the top (otherwise my cat would get in it) and I have a clamp lamp with a 60 watt bulb up top. The crickets really like the heat since they are always sitting under the bulb, and you can't smell them unless you put your head in the container.
