How much variety in protein source?
Hi All,
I have been lurking here for a while now. This site has helped me tremendously. Now time for some questions I've found conflicting views on.
How much variety in protein source does my juvie bearded dragon need? He gets a huge variety in vegetables. So I am wondering if it would be ok for me to just feed him rollie pollies. Crickets are a pain to breed and rollie pollies seem a lot easier. Maybe I'm just lying to myself though.
Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure about rollie pollies (i'll see what I can find out), but you can feed them silkies, roaches (i hear are easy to breed), supersworms, wax worms (occasionally).

I cannot find any information on the nutritional values of pill bugs but I feel that feeding a variety of animal protein sources is almost more necessary than feeding a varied diet of veggies. My guys get crickets, meal worms, silk worms, pinkies, and the occasional treat of wax or butter worms. He also gets ground chicken added to his salad every so often as a treat. Having an animal on a diet that doesn't provide any other options opens you up and makes your animal more susceptable to nutritional defiencies.

Do you all breed your own feeders? Or buy periodically?
What kind of roaches do you recommend? He is really small only a month old.
As far a mealworms go the only ones I can find are older so the exoskeleton is hardened. I was under the impression they are better softer. Is this correct?
Thanks again.

Oh, you said juvie, lol...I was thinking bigger. If he is only a month old, I would stick with crickets or silkworms, easier for it to digest. I buy periodically but plan on breeding roaches here soon.
Correct on the mealies. Unless you have tiny ones that just shed, I wouldnt feed them until he/she is a bit older.

We feed crickets, superworms, mealworms and some wax worms. A variety, we don't feed mealworms to anyone smaller then 7-9" though. Sean talked his mother into letting him get 2 pair of hissing cockroaches in August and the babies are now getting old enough to feed. I have heard Bearded Dragons like them, will have to give them a try real soon.

I really appreciated the thread, because I'm about to get (I hope! if the current owner inspects my home and finds me worthy...) a Bearded Dragon this weekend. He's about 9 months old, I am told, and I am waiting to see how big he is and learn what she has been feeding him.
