feeding quantity
so Spiderman is around 5 months old and i'm just wondering how much he should be eating. he seems to be shedding and growing no problem, but i'm curious. i give him escarole and between 8 and 15 crickets a day.. he eats them up quick but I usually don't give him more, because as it is I only have enough space to house enough crickets to last 3 days at this rate of feeding (have to use one of those cricket keepers since my new lacerta got the 10g tank, plus all the ones that die). i'm thinking if he should be eating more than that, i'm going to have to get crickets every day. can I mix in wax or silkworms to supplement the crickets since they're easier to keep in a large quantity?
is there "too much" or will he stop when he's full? |

Some Bearded Dragons have the "stop mechanism" turned off =) and stuff their faces beyond the capacity of their large stomachs. Usually they throw up later.
If your Bearded Dragon is one of them, you'll have to be the one to establish the limits. If not you can do what most of us do, let them eat whatever they can in 10 minutes. At 5 months old he should be eating a lot more crickets than that but I don't know how big are the crickets you are feeding him. If you are following the "no bigger than the space between his eyes" rule, you are not feeding him enough. Wax worms are a treat. Feed one every now and then only. Silkworms are very good. If it's easier for you, you can give them as staple instead of crickets. Last but not least, you should diversify and mix more veggies. If you are unsure about which ones, just follow Veronica's list

Depending on the size of the Bearded Dragon (length), I feed a mixture of crickets, superworms, meal worm (over 8" Long) and wax (as a treat). Feed that he can eat in 5-10 minutes. But I all ways have a bowl of greens (collard, mustard, etc with a vegetable toping) in the cage at all times. This will give him a chance to eat at will.

Also an easy way to keep crix is to go get a rubbermaid or sterilite tub (I got a 20 gallon and can easily keep a weeks worth for my three juvenile dragons.
I also agree...as much as he can eat in ten minutes. One of mine will eat about 30 easy (same age), |

Mine goes nuts for crix, so I limit him to maybe 5 - 10 mins worth in his feeding tank. The veggies I keep in his tank for most of the day to let him eat as he wants.

Oh I also just thought....I like the idea of being able to keep the crix for a few days that gives me a chance to gutload them really well. Feeding them orange, apple, and a calcium rich food. Hence more nutrition to the dragons. I know that crix you buy are fed but usually not too well. And we all know an empty cricket is a nutritionally empty shell.

thanks for the replies. i've since gone out and purchased a large plastic tub to keep crickets in and have upped his diet to how much he could eat in ten minutes, which has been between 20 and 30 medium crickets. also, instead of just escarole I started making him a salad mix of escarole, collard and dandelion greens.
